Default What's a fair price for a valve job on a '01 300GS, Rockland Co. NY area?

Like the subject line says... man I am pretty depressed right now but the 300GS I got two months ago is in need of a valve job. The first garage I went to estimated around $3500... holy moly. I don't want to think about what a dealer wants! I'm even wondering if the car is worth spending that kind of money... it's an '01 with 120K in otherwise good shape. I'd love to keep it, hoping this particular mechanic was just estimating on the very high side. He also told me he'd need the car for a week. Thanks in advance for any helpful advice!!

Sorry- I always thought "valve job" referred to the complete procedure - remove & machine the head, etc. I screwed up majorly and drove the car low on oil by about 1.5 quarts and the valves are tickin' and clickin' now. The mechanic I saw said to get it done ASAP before the rest of the engine is toast.

I posted in the GS300 2G forum before here and I'm getting some good insights (it was one of those replies that told me to try posting in this forum). That thread is here: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/nor...-job-cost.html.

It's possible I may not need a whole valve job - just an adjustment & replacing a bad lifter(s). I will probably go to a dealer, keeping my fingers crossed (and wallet ready).
