Uh-oh... Wrong Filter?
Hi everyone,
I have a 2008 IS250 AWD with about 8K on it and I think I used the wrong oil filter on my first oil change.
I did the first oil change at 4K and I just did my second oil change at 8K yesterday but when I took the old oil filter out, I found that its shorter (significantly shorter, like about an 1") than the new replacement oil filter I had. Both times, I had bought OEM LEXUS/TOYOTA filters from Carson Toyota. Do you think I may have gotten the wrong part the first time or did Toyota make a change to the filters recently? I don't have the old filters p/n to compare it with the new one since its been almost half a year since I've changed the oil last. I just hope I didn't damage the engine.

It did fit, it was just longer, I just found out the IS350 RWD uses an oil filter that is somewhat shorter so I'm thinking I may have gotten the wrong filter from the dealer. they both look the same just different in height, it is a paper cartridge filter not a conventional spin on filter and I guess since I didnt compare the filters the first time I changed the oil thats why I didn't notice the differences? Well whats done is done, hopefully not too much damage has occured... at least I was running Mobil 1 for all this time so hopefully less wear.

But I’ve seen CT folks converting their oil filter oil housing to the conventional spin-on type. Apparently, Lexus offers a short and a tall spin-on and most prefer the longer one when doing that conversion.
So here, the RX takes a shorter filter.. would I be able to use the longer filter?

Well as they say the damage is done, but I dont think too much to notice. I have seen people improvise by using shorter filters or even cutting longer filters to fit an ES, not recommended btw, to no ill effects that were noticeable. The car lasted close to 200k miles before they traded it in.
