Service costs and suggestions
I called my local dealer (in Tucson) to get some quotes on certain services. I was curious to see what everyone thinks about these prices, and even if they should be done. These are the things I've selected to do from the "suggested" 60k service:
Oil change - $40
Transmission and differential fluid changed - $210
Spark plugs changed - $250
Brake fluid changed - $120
Engine coolant changed - $120
Also, what do you guys think about changing the O2 sensors? How often should it be doen? Thanks
Chris

Wow, I don't know what the independents charge, but I would imagine they're cheaper than the Lex dealer! $250 to change spark plugs? That's not including wires right? At $10 a pop for premium plugs, that only 80 bucks. Why is the labor $170? Even at $80/hr that's 2 hrs and I know it doesn't take a competent mechanic 2 hrs to change plugs!
Same with tranny and differential oil. Any competent mechanic should be able to change that, and you'd save enough money to use a super premium lube even.
Now if they do a really good job with the brake fluid change it might be worth it. By this I don't mean just let the lines bleed out. They need to FLUSH the entire system. Same goes for the coolant.
I say let them do the oil change, and the brakes and coolant if they FLUSH those. Otherwise, all the other stuff goes to a good independent shop.
You'll save enough to buy a stack of cd's for the car!

Mine,
Transmission and differential fluid changed - $100
Spark plugs changed - about $120 with IR spark plugs
Oil change - $20 but I bring my own Mobil1 5W-30
Rest of them I simply don't remember.
