Exhaust issue on ES
The essentials:
126,500 miles in my 2001 ES300. Daily driver. Running 10W-30 full synthetic Mobil-1 oil. Put in a bottle of Valvoline fuel injector cleaner @ 125,000 miles.
Lately I've been noticing black soot that resides on the bottom outer tip of my exhaust. It's not much but it's noticeable when looking closely at the exhaust. This comes up usually a few days after cleaning the car (including the exhaust). Has anyone else had that happen to their car? What could cause this black soot to show up? I don't know if it has something to do with the fuel filter, but I have been informed by all accounts that these filters never need to be changed on a Lexus. Just not so sure in this case
Also when my ES is running at idle, I can hear a slight rattle noise when standing in front of the exhaust. I believe a bolt may be loose underneath the exhaust system but I'll have to put the car on the lift to get a better view
Any ideas are much appreciated, thanks.

With 44,000 miles on the RX,
I get the soot on the bottom of my exhaust pipe, inside and outside edges.
I contribute it to the fuel additives used today. I use Chevron 91.
It's also on my Toyota Landcruiser, with 290,000 miles. Also, Chevron 91.
There may be a little rust in your catalytic converter rattling around. I would wait till the emissions indicated failure.
