SC 400 Shift ****
I have read the threads and have not found the specific procedure for "pushing" the chrome piece away from the **** so I can remove it. Mine isn't "pushing". Is it a friction ring and I'm not exerting enough pressure or is there a "secret" tool I use to get it to move without messing up the chrome? I bought the repair manuals and they cleverly show the shift lever with the **** on or off, but don't tell me how to remove it. Thanks for your help.

On my GS4, the shift **** just twists counterclock-wise out--if taking out the shift know from the shift lever is what you're asking. It might be initially hard to get it twisting counterclockwise, but it will twist easier after you loosen it a bit. To get it back on, twist it on clockwise until it gets some resistance--when your shifter is facing the front, then you can leave it there.
However, if you're trying to get the bottom chrome piece the shift **** itself, it's a different matter--but I really don't why you'd want to do this. Anyways, first, remove the shift **** from the shift stalk as described above.
But before I go furhter, you need to know how the bottom chrome piece is held. Underneath the chrome trim piece and on the shift **** is a circular white soft-plastic sleeve--from the bottom to the top (about 0.3"), it tapers wider then drops off to create a notch; the sleeve is permanent glued into the wood shifter piece. The chrome hard-plastic piece has four tabs with plastic teeth that goes into the knotched area of the aforementioned plastic sleeve. You have to be very careful to not break these teeth if you're trying to remove the chrome trim piece.
