I had always owned Lexus.I have 2001 LX 470 & 2006 RX 330.
Its hard to find any complaints as far as ride and reliability point of view.
Only thing is it is V8 and parts and labour will be expensive, this is the only setback other then I like to drive Lexus.
Please check the reviews on www.edmunds.com/lexus/lx470/2001/review.html
Just last month I decide to sell my 2001 LX 470 nad I place adv.on www.lxstrader.com,as for a change I am planning to buy GX470.
But if you require any question about 2001 Lexus, you can contact me at any time.
Good Luck.

Besides the somewhat shady gas mileage paired up with not a lot of get up and go power, it is one of the best larger SUV's ever built IMO. It has plenty of torque though, so it does pretty well towing and it makes a fantastic road/trail trip vehicle. I have a Land Cruiser, but more less the same vehicle and it is incredibly reliable.

Heat shields, exhaust manifolds, and rust on the rear tailgate, thats all you need to watch for, other than that, it is a great truck, perfect for towing, offroading, or just crusing along the motorway

Need to look for rust, and proper maintenance. Of these two are good - you're good to go, there is not very much that went wrong with these vehicles historically. I'm on my second 470 and never had any issue personally, 200k+ combined. The maintenance is not cheap, but still is quite a bit less than the germans for comparison purposes. I have no problem recommending a used 470 to anyone, this I would not say about a number of vehicles I had in the past, or still have.

how would you guys compare LX470 with GX470 ? i would not be buying from a Lexus dealer, just some used car dealer. They also has one 2004 GX470 with 45k miles and its also cheaper than the LX.

If an ok, i would take the gx, but since not, the lx. When we first bought our lx, we liked it a lot more then the gx, but now that we are planning on getting rid of the lx, we are looking at the the gx, depends on the year

There is just something 'wrong' with the GX proportions to my eye. Aesthetics aside, it is smaller, has less space inside and is a middle ground between the top of the Land Cruiser line (LX470), and the more entry-level trucks from Toyota like 4Runner, Helix etc. In other markets also is known as LC Prado.

Just purchased a 2001 LX 470 with 88K on it. Took it to the Lexus dealership (against my better judgement) and came away with a $2100 tab. They did the "95K" mile check...timing belt with all the trimmings plus they found a leaking "power steering pump" which was a shock to me because I didn't see anything on the floor and it certainly wasn't making any noises. Who knows. Anyway, so far we like the vehicle. I was installing a trailer hitch last weekend and saw a rubber grommet in the floor pan under the third row seats....it showed some early stages of corrosion around it so I'm going to take it to a body shop and have them check / repair the undercarriage for me. I'm hopeful this thing lasts for another 6 years and I suspect if we can keep the body in good shape that shouldn't be a problem.

Accumulators and struts are expensive, and at 60K you will soon need timing belt kit. Also expensive.
