Default Just wondering, when do you change your tires?

I have 4/32 left on my Michelins and I am choosing new tires. I'm wondering what the ideal treadwear level is to consider new tires. When do you notice the most drop-off in handling in wet and dry? When do y'all normally change tires?

When my wife starts nagging that the tires look too bold and shiny. But this is not what I would recommend to anyone. There is a tread wear indicator, when it is showing up - officially time to get new rubber.

You're right on the money at 4/32. My Yokohamas sounded terrible at 4/32 and I had them replaced. If you have the cash to do it now, go ahead and get it done and order them. Your tires' best days are long behind them now.

I had my original Michelin LTX M/S on my 1999 LX470 for tons of miles...I bought it with 72K miles (all hiway) from a doctor who drove it from Carmel to his weekend house in Tahoe. At 72K the tires looked about 40-50% and I figured I'd replace them within 10K miles....I drove them and replaced two at 111K and just the other two at 125K...They still had some tread left and handled fine in the rain right up to the time I changed them. They had just gotten down to the center wear bar when I put the new Michelin LTX's on them. I got them on ebay at Discount Tires.com...Sure I paid a little extra for these but nothing beats them as far as wearability goes! FYI I had the same tires on my old 91 4-runner and I got 98K out of them!!!
