Price and HP (Trade-In Values and Retail)
Hi all,
Insurance just declared my 1998 GS400 a total loss last week and so I'm in the market for a new one. At 220,000 miles of mostly trouble free daily driving I'm not disappointed - It was a great car (actually still is - bought it from insurance company at a $225 salvage value with only body damage) that my kids don't mind driving at all.
So, I've decided to move up to a LS460. I don't care too much about the model, base or L is fine with me. As I've researched Cars.com and autotrader it seems the asking prices for clean 2007 and 2008 models (no accidents, clean titles) with mileage ranging from 65K to 85K are averaging around $25k. I'm trying to get an idea as to how much room there might be for negotiation. Would it be unreasonable for me to make $22K my top offer? (of course I'll pay the taxes on top of that). I understand there are a lot of variables that go into the price a dealer will sell for including trade-in value given, cots of prep etc. Just looking for an idea.
Also, I've seen some LS460s with advertised MPG at 16/24 and some at 19/27. What is the difference? The lower figures seem like they would be more accurate for such a large engine. Thanks in advance!

Pole Position
I have found the lower mileage is always for the AWD version

The MPG varies on any vehicle due to driving habits, options, AWD, altitude, terrain, etc. The MPG is good for the LS 460 considering it size.

The difference in MPG is due to the change in EPA testing standards between 2007 and 2008. The engine, transmission, rear end, etc, are all identical - the consumption of the cars is identical, only the testing method differs.
You should be able to get a nice 2007 for $25,000 from a private party. Anything from a used car dealership at that price should be viewed suspiciously

Nope, all they can say is no. It would help to hand them a $1000 check as a deposit when you make the offer. It shows you are a serious buyer, AND it is real hard for them to hand that money back.
