Default 1st ever post LS430/LS460 comparison

Good evening- This is my very 1st post and I am very happy to join this forum. I have been a Lexus owner since 2000 (1997 LX 450 -I traded in a very nice 1993 Infiniti Q45) and currently own a 2002 LS 430, 2004 RX 330, 2008 LS 460(ML fully loaded) and a 2009 GX470 (ML fully loaded). All were bought CPO. I bought my 460 2 months ago and wanted to share my initial impressions. I appreciated similar threads as they helped inform my new purchase. As you can see I keep my cars and some fortunate immediate family members benefit from my Lexus "hand me downs". I had some regret in trading in the LX 450 for my 2002 LS 430 (even though I got well above KBB) so I have been reluctant to sell any of these wonderful vehicles. In January I bumped into the person who bought the truck and I am pleased to report that the 450 is still going strong.

My initial impression is that the LS 460 is an amazing vehicle, especially with all of the bells and whistles. The Levinson system is incredible and I thoroughly enjoy the toys and upgraded features. I have no road noise issues and I smile every time I start to drive my "new" ride. Even with all of these kudos I must say that the LS 430 is still my favorite. It is the base model (no Nav) however I love that car!! Even after 8 years of ownership it is bulletproof (142,000 miles) and served as my DD for over 6 years and I still take it out on the weekends. In some ways it is unfair to compare because the 460 has the additional features. I like the updated features of the 460 and I believe it will age well, however I believe that the 2002 LS430 is still one of the best cars on the planet so I am glad that I don't have to choose and I can drive both.

This topic comes up quite a bit on the LS430 forum more than it does here, there are several threads about it.

Here is a post of my thoughs from one of them a while back.

I really love both gens what they bring to the table b/c they are two different animals in how they perform, look, and ride. I have given my 2 cents on this topic a lot and think some are too hard on the 460 b/c they spend so little time with the car, the engineering of the 460 is quite amazing and takes some time to soak it all in. It's amazing that a 4.6 L V8 can get the same MPG as a V6, the most I have gotten on the hwy heading to DE from Atl was over 28, city mix is 21/22 & city 18+/19+. I have truly enjoyed my ownership of both amazing cars and highly recommend them to anybody looking. I answer their pros /cons question which comes down to what they are looking for in a car and their driving habits.

Funny someone posted here earlier that we can get used to how nice these cars are to a point we get a little jaded, I felt like that after getting the 460 wondering why I did not have the same over whelming feeling like I did when moving from a 4Runner to the 430. Reason being I was already coming from a top shelf car in its own right that I loved and going to its successor did not seem like a giant leap. After a yr of ownership I have grown to appreciate how fantastic the 460 is while understanding just how fortunate/blessed to be able to have owned two outstanding machines! If you guys every go out to lunch with co-workers or ride with your friends who own non flagship cars or even you rent a car you will see just how fast you think Toto we are not in Kansas anymore! It brings you back to ignorance is bliss quickly; it’s a reminder just how great both gens are. Let me say it did not take me a yr to appreciate the 460 but it took more than a quick test drive to really grasp the progression of Lexus new vision for the LS. Believe or not they are two members here that own both! Again I love them both like a wife an ex girlfriend who I will always have love for, neither are perfect but both are very special.

If any of you are interested in the design of the 460 check this out: http://www.topspeed.com/cars/lexus/2...60-ar1945.html
Now I'm on my 2nd LS460 as you can see if I had to choose it is the 460, BUT I will always love the 430!

Great write up about your experience with both cars, I also owned a 2005 LS 430 Ultra Luxury fully loaded, and I absolutely loved that car, the ride was so smooth and it was so quite inside, I had a lot of different cars and out of all of them that I sold I never had any regrets besides selling the LS430, I later again searched for a 04-06 Ultra Luxury Model and had no luck finding one, after some time passed I decided to purchase a LS460 and very happy with the purchase, but if you would ask me to go back to the Ls430 that I had before I would seriously consider it lol

We have a 2001 LS430 which my wife drives and she wants to move up to a 460.

She wants all of the "bells and whistles" including Bluetooth interface to her phone, backup camera, and "a chip" for playing music.

Pretty sure a 2009-2011 (the years we'd probably consider) has the first two but not sure what options the audio system has for playing MP3s or WMA files from a storage drive.

Is there a USB or memory chip slot in the LS460???

(I am fixing up a '92 SC and installed a Pioneer head unit with GPS/NAV, DVD, memory chip slot, i-device cable, and BU camera so she is a bit jealous ).

Thanks for any education....

Edit: I found a few threads on the topic that confirms there is a USB port but it seems to favor an iPod or MP3 player over a memory card. Many reports of being unable to get a thumb drive to work and when it does it is a bit clunky... My 2007 Honda with it's PCMIA card works better than what I am reading here. Sad.

Get a large-capacity iPod Classic off ebay for $100. Load all your music on it (160GB max). Put iPod in a protective sleeve ($2.00 or Kleenex/rubber band. Connect it with dock/USB cable to USB connector in center console of 460. Toss the sleeve in the back of the console and forget about it until you have new music to load. Fire up your car, select iPod, and enjoy. With minimal effort, you can create playlists on your PC/Mac, transfer them to the iPod, and select them as you will using the Lexus tunes controller. Not sad at all.
