The 01 with 70K needing tires for 10K sounds like a good deal. Even if you need to put a few extra into the 01 the 06 (which might still require some additional dollars) will be depreciating at a faster rate for double the money and they both drive equally well.

Easiest ti tell, f you have rear seat radio controls, you have Ultra. If no radio controls, but you have leather trimmed lower dash then Custom. Anything else is ML or lower (no nav)

Ahh it has no nav so that must mean it's lower than ML.

I have an '04, and I like the subtle upgrades (especially the tail lights) but I could never make the case that it's worth the substantial premium over the earlier editions.
The big "draw" for me on the LS is having a big, comfortable sedan that's built like a tank. The "gadget" list was just never that big of a deal, and if anything, I'm wary of too much technology because it usually means more repairs.
If you find a great deal on an earlier one, I'd scoop it up. It's 95% the same car for close to 50% less money.

If compare base to base then maybe 90% same car (exterior and 6 speed), but if you go upstream you further add backup camera and Bluetooth, so I would say 75-80% car. Last two are big.conveniences in my book and portable GPS don't function the same and I can't stand dangling wires.

whats the average cost of a 01 - 04 model over there? and 04 onward?
my 2001 LS430 which has what you class as the UL features cost me $5450 back in july last year.
105,000 miles on it at the time ( now 109,000 ) and full lexus history with timing belt just being done.

10-12K for a clean 01 depending on mileage.
