It's not really the windshield that senses rain, it's a module glued to the windshield behind the mirror. It works, I think, by measuring light refraction - when the winshield gets wet, the light refraction changes and the wipers activate. If the winshield is replaced, the correct re-attachment of this module is critical for proper function.

If the windshield has been replaced with a non-Lexus windshield (Pinkertons is one) it may not work.

So since we have confirmed the switch is indeed in the correct position

Check the windshield for the manufactor stamp. Off hand i'm not sure where it is, but I think I remember seeing it either on the bottom or top of the drivers side.

Second, take a look at that box thats behind the rearview mirror. I was reading a post from another member recently where the shop reinstalled that sensor with the gel pad and had gotten some air bubbles in it that prevented it from working correclty. His were going on and off sporatically.

Third up, there is most likely a fuse for that somewhere. I'd take a look at that as well.

Fourth, never heard of this being related to washers or that sensor, but are cars seem to going really wacky when the battery is about to go. If all else fails, have a local autostore check your battery before you pay a gazillion dollars to have the dealerships check it out.
