As always buddy you are on point like an old school Uncle Sam poster! I wish this post had a like button, I say the same thing in the 460 forum as some seasoned members too. You will have OP's post a new issue never discussed before or an old one and never come back to provide closure to the thread by posting the resolution. I have seen a few I love my car threads here and there and even then you will have a BUT after the praise.

Tee your right, eventually something will go wrong on your car it's mechanical. Most of the parts that goes bad isn't made by the manufacture, but that doesn't mean the car is a POS.

Strange thing is that the very old diesel MB cars used to run for a very long time. I guess all the "improvements" over the years made them less robust/reliable.

MB has also been more of a Status Symbol car than Lexus in the past.

MB puts a lot of electronics into their cars. As an example in the 2009-2011 SLK - turning the key to start the engine in the car takes 5 computer ECMs to all sequentially coordinate the starting sequence. Anything going wrong in that sequence bricks the car. And when something does go wrong with the ECMs, connectors, sensors and related wiring it can be simple to fix or sometimes it can require serious and very expensive MB specialist time to troubleshoot and resolve. For my money MB has gone way overboard on electronics - most of it will work great for first 5 years of the car's life (after new release bugs are worked out). But after that as the electronics inevitably degrade the cars will become unreliable and expensive to repair. Complex technology and elaborate electronics is not your friend in a used car.

Not to mention all the drive train and suspension issues that they are known for. As with BMW and especially the 750 series.

I really wish the W220's were more reliable. I saw a silver S600 at the mall yesterday and I was drooling over it.

I also Like R230 SL and the CL from that era. I might pick one up once I start making more money. No point in having one now and not being able to afford maintenance/repairs on it.

I've spent some time in the S430, I definitely think Mercedes downgraded their flagship line during that time period when the LS430 was out. It just didn't seem like a $90,000 car to me, had some cheap touches that didn't appropriate given the price of the car.

I do feel the driving dynamics of the car were better than the LS, good blend of smooth and comfortable but with solid handling.

The new Mercedes S-Class is beautiful and looks much more like a 6 figure car, but I wouldn't want to go near it once the warranty was out.

by nearly all accounts the benz has better handling and is more fun to drive

I will also say I love the styling of a lot of the benzes, especially the s-class , which was my dream car for years until i started researching them and seeing the reality.

The thing for me is , if I know a car has poor reliability, and poor engineering and lifespan, the car starts to look cheap to me , like someone wearing a fake rolex or a fake diamond ring, it loses all its appeal
