This is possible... When I was taking the radio out of the car, i bumped the shifter and it slid into gear when the car was off, that fully I had the brake on.
The noise it makes whine stalls is a grinding noise, similar to that of starting a car when it is already started.
I get it back today from the shop after having a new steering rack installed... I'll try a few things out.
Anything else it could be?

Did you try what I suggested? Parking pawl is not going to cause the engine to die when put in gear.
The noise you describe sounds like the pump cavitating, is the filter clean and proper trans fluid quantity?
If the transmission is loading the engine down its either the tc like I said above or some bearing in the trans that's seizing up. Also it could be that when the engine torques over its pulling on a bad wire and shutting off.

Ok, here's some new info.
The previous owner said he had the starter replaced recently, that's all I know of the service history...
This morning, I was planning on adjusting the kick down cable, and before I got to that, when I put the car in R, it made a noise and died, as usual.
BUT this time I noticed, the dash lights went out.
I shifted it quick into N, and could do so without the key on, or my foot on the brake. (Not good)
BUT here's the strange thing...
If I am in N after it stalls, and I shift the car into R, WITHOUT starting it, the car will start.
Simply putting it in R is causing the starter to engage.
WTF?!?!
ANYONE???

Holy cow that is super wierd, going into R the car started? like on its own? what the heck?
There isn't some anti theft auto start feature wired into that car aftermarket is there?
Maybe the shift cable is out of sequence for the transmission, I guess anything is possible with that sort of mileage.
My Astro van had a mis-aligned trans shift cable and would do wierd shifting things like that, make gear noises. But the lights going out and starting in R, hmmmmm.
