Can u see if EGR pipe's broken without taking it off (1st gen)?
As the title says - is it possible to see that accordion part of the EGR pipe, I guess it must be on the bottom of the pipe, without taking it off first?
I guess, I would like to see first if it really needs replacing.
Some days I get smoked like a mosquito from all the exhaust coming in, and others - absolutely nothing. I don't get it. Maybe the opening in the pipe is moving somehow and sometimes the gasses get through, and sometimes they do not? I noticed it seems to smoke more on uneven roads...
Or is it possible that it is something else? I can't imagine the exhaust pipe being cracked since this car never left California and has barely seen rain, much less snow or salt.

Well from what I have read the Y pipe can blow out as well. I would try feeling with your hands (after letting the car sit for 8+ hours of course) on the accordion bit and if you feel a gap or split then its no good. If not I would look at the Y pipe piece as the next culprit if not just some flange gaskets.

you can hear the leak more than see it. i've had my EGR pipe leaking for a few months now and there is no smoke that i can see but i do smell the gas outside the engine bay and can definitely hear it!
if you see actual smoke, i'm leaning towards your power steering burning off into the intake.

No visible smoke, and I can't tell if it sounds different, because it has been this way since i bought it. It may be just a small crack that opens and closes depending on weather or something...
