I've been wondering about the rattling sound and near-total lack of bass from the stock Pioneer system in my car and finally today pulled the subwoofer cover off to discover the sub is completely blown. Parts catalog shows the correct part is 86160-50010, but all I've been able to find is an ebay listing for a part number 86160-50070 that appears identical apart from using plastic attachment points rather than metal. That 86160-50070 purports to be out of a 1993 car whereas mine is a 1991. I figure it should drop right in and connect up with no problems, but does anyone have any experience to the contrary?.

could be different resistance ratings, could be out of a NAK car, etc...

Better off buying the correct one or (better yet) putting an aftermarket new su in instead of one 24 years old and probably in not much better shape than your stock one.

I do know it's not a Nakamichi unit, those were 86160-50020 I believe. I went ahead and ordered it, it can't be any worse than the totally blown speaker that's in there now and the mounting points appear to be identical. I'd prefer to go the aftermarket route but I was planning on doing that later as part of a complete audio refresh. With that in mind this replacement doesn't need to last forever.

To confirm for anyone that might wander in here on a google search- part number 86160-50070 will fit and function perfectly in a 90-92 car in place of 86160-50010. Impedance is exactly the same and it bolts right up with no trouble.

A perfectly doable option is to replace the suspension foam with a replacement from Simply Speakers. You get the foam, the glue, and the UV protective "paint" for 26 bucks. You also get the satisfaction of continuing to use a component matched to your original system. It adds exactly the correct amount of bass for the original system.

I used this same kit for my Parent's 03 Sienna Symphony. It has some nice JBL Subwoofer door speakers that are far superior than any aftermarket replacement so for about $20 I was about to redo the speaker cones/gaskets by using their kit and it's been working great! Bass hits hard and the sound system sounds good again.

I was originally looking into doing that but there was literally nothing left to reattach. The suspension was totally gone, I've never seen such a trashed speaker.

But I agree, I didn't really realize what I was missing until now. I totally understand the praise for this audio system now.

You pluck off all old evidence of foam suspension. So you basically want it gone. Then you wipe the edge of the speaker cone with alcohol and you clean the outer edge of the speaker frame where the old suspension used to attach. Slap some adhesive to the frame/cone. The new foam has a generous overlap. The only critical moment is to get the voice coil (?) in the exact middle of its in-and-out travel AND in the exact middle of the magnet, then apply the foam in a relaxed state to the edge and the cone in that perfect middle position.
It was fun. Good music in an hour or two.

I recently upgraded the stock stereo on my 91 Lexus LS400 to a Kenwood double-din stereo... As you may know this renders the sub useless.. I am now looking into buying an aftermarket amplifier so I can hook up an aftermarket sub..

Any recommendations as to what amplifier should I get? brand, type (mono/stereo), etc?
