All my crazy Lexus issues SOLVED!! (ECU-leaking capacitor)

Replaced the caps in the ECU of my 92 SC300 over a year and 15,000 miles ago. Have taken it through 100 degree heat and 10 below cold, and the car ran like new..........until 2 or 3 weeks ago.
Problems similar to before, rough idle and strange instrument panel readings returned. Got to checking and strangely enough found that the alternator was literally filled with oil!!! Bad valve cover gasket was the culprit------- new alternator and gaskets fixed things and am back enjoying the open road.

Do you know the reason why you had similar problems?
Too much ripples at the DC5V confuses processors when capacitors are deteriorated.
Too low battery voltage can't supply a stable DC5V to processors and those are confused.

Just joined this forum. I own a 1993 Camry 2.2. For about a year now it has a very bad idle and hesitation when cold. Improves when car is warm. Definitely have noticed less power and high fuel consumption.
Engine is very good. Compressions excellent, good sparks. Starts every time, but after about a minute, rpm drops to almost stalling and hesitation on acceleration.
I have changed temperature sensor, oxygen sensor, MAP sensor, ignition coil, spark plugs, leads, cleaned idle control valve, checked throttle position sensor, cleaned EGR, cleaned all terminals and earth points, spent at least 10 hours probing everything.
As a last resort I was going to fork out money for a ECU. But then I found this site and decided to remove ECU and check.
What do you know..... I found leaking Capacitors everywhere, just like in the photos on page1. I will attempt to repair and post pictures soon.
I found a youtube video of a camry that is doing EXACTLY what my camry does.

I went ahead and changed out the two(2) leaky capacitors that I found on the ECU. They were Michicon (PF) 47uF 63v (Brown) Capacitors. The other 4 look to be a different brand and show no leakage. Due to my limited capacitor knowledge and soldering skills, I decided to leave these for now.
Anyway I can confirm that the car IS NOW FIXED!!! NO more bad idle. NO more hesitation on acceleration. I can't believe the difference. There is a definite increase in low end power.
Lately the car has been very sluggish which I put down to the engine getting old. But now it is back to how it was when I bought it.
I am hoping that fuel economy will improve as well.

Hi ClubLexus,
Firstly, thank you for the great thread!
I've just picked up a 1990 model LS400 and am trying to put my cap order together.
The 2x differnet 10μF ones listed in the OP have a really long wait time (almost 3 months).
I want to order them all from the same place and get them ASAP.
I wasn't able to find any that had the exact same specifications. Is there a good alternative I can order or do I have to wait 3 months?

As I wrote at the post #8, Nichicon PF(M) capacitors tend to leak when aged and cause serious problems. The quaternary ammonium salt was said to be one of the best electrolytes when it was released. But soon it was found not easy to use for long time.

Thanks Yamae.
I tried to post a few photos but this site won't allow me to, for some reason.
Anyway, I posted a few photos on another site called Badcaps.net
Here is a link,

You may need to be a member to see photos though?

the one to get in 10uF is the 50V Chemi-con KZE EKZE500ELL100ME07D - if sold out, use alternate factory authorized source here: EKZE500ELL100ME07D
Post #132 & #133:
Please excuse my ignorance but I'm still not sure what I'm looking at/for.
I've tried entering the same search criteria on Digikey and it only brings up the first link above for the Chemi-Con EKZE500ELL100ME07D,
Which one from either of those charts should I look for? BXC-124?

As far as I could tell before the alternator completely stopped charging, the motor oil that leaked into the alternator began to intermittently cause short circuits within the electrical system of the car.

Thank you all
I am very proud to be a Lexus owner mainly because of this forum and guys like you and Yamae who have dedicated alot of time to help those in need. I recent got the caps replaced in my 94 ls and just recently purchased a 95 ls and I will get the caps replaced in it soon. Thanks to all the support on CL!
You can post up which caps you are thinking of using (brand and series) and yamae or I will verify that they are low ESR type!
don't feel bad if you did the job once already with the wrong type of capacitor, I am guilty of that myself! - I consider the first time was practice - lol
