Headers/exhaust Manifolds

I have only seen 1 header for the LS400, it was a shorty design from Japan that I doubt improved the power much... certainly not enough to justify the cost and expense of the $1000+ price tag.
I am working on exhaust system upgrades and am interested in seeing anything out there. To get the parts I want I am most likely going to have to fabricate them myself. I don't know if I will be interested in production but I will keep the board up to date.
The stock manifolds certainly have room for improvement. To have any hope of passing a visual emissions inspection a replacement part needs to keep the catalysts in the same place as stock. This is a major limitation. Still, improving the transitions and restrictions could be worth in the neighborhood of 10-15hp.
If this is not a concern... a long tube set-up similar to Peter Scott's (see the SC forum) is much more desireable. Properly designed a long tube header could be worth 20-30hp over a cat back alone exhaust upgrade.

TTHANX, FOR YOUR INPUT. IF POSSIBLE, I WOULD LIKE TO ACHIEVE 300+HP. I WANTED TO START WITH THE OBVIOUS, THE EXHAUST.

I WAS HOPING THERE WAS A CAMSHAFT KIT OR A COMPLETE EXHAUST PACKAGE, THAT I COULD COMBINE. I PREFER TO KEEP THE CAR N/A. THE CAR IS A DAILY DRIVER. I NEED THE CAR TO BE RELIABLE. THE CAR IS RATED AT 250HP, I WAS HOPING 50 MORE HP WOULDN'T BE TOO DIFFICULT. BUT SO FAR, NOT TOO MANY PEOPLE HAVE DONE ANY WORK TO THEIR ENGINES. WELL MY NEXT CHOICE IS A 2002 MERCURY MARAUDER.

As far as the center section back... there are a number of choices and I would most likely source mufflers, silencers and stainless tubing and find a savy muffler shop to hang it per my instructions. The goal is quiet idle and cruise with a definite rumble under hard acceleration.
I am also planning some shorty headers.
LEX2K2, first of all, unlock your caps key.
50hp? I like to talk about RWHP (rear wheel horsepower) as that is the key. Also, the power CURVE is very important. Peak power is NOT the only or even the most important consideration. Changing cams will move the power curve higher in the RPM range at the expense of low RPM power. Here are my recommendations.
Performace Torque Converter 10 rwhp + 30% more launch torque
Air cleaner box modification: 5 rwhp
True cat back exhaust with GOOD y pipe junctions: 10-20 rwhp
Rear gear change with LSD: 15% more rear wheel torque throughout the range
Header/manifold improvement: 10-20 rwhp (only good with exhaust upgrade.
Vane Pressure Converter: 10- 20 rwhp
Air/Fuel and Timing control plus dyno tune: 10-30 rwhp
AFTER ALL the above...
Cams: 20 - 30 rwhp
Head and intake porting: 20-30 rwhp
With the above AND the removal of the RPM limiter the potential to gain OVER 100 rwhp is here. The stock 250hp engine makes around 175 rwhp and the potential for 300+rwhp is definite WITHOUT supercharging. Stock 1/4 mile is aprox 16 seconds at 87mph. With the full list above the car could run high 12s at over 105mph. These mods PLUS super/turbocharging could yield a car with over 450 rwhp+++ (550hp at the engine)
