Replacing just the shock insulator?

Replacing just the shock insulator?
I was told by my mechanic that the insulators on my front shocks have worn away and it is now metal to metal. He suggests replacing the shocks at the same time to save later but I think my shocks are fine. Would it be foolish not to swap out the shocks at the same time? Any advice?

How many miles? Where in CA are you? Thinking, the weather is so mild in most parts of CA, I am at a loss why your insulators would be metal to metal. The insulators on our '83 Maxima with 280K miles were still in good shape. The insulators on my '80 Celica though simply age related are still useable. Easy to inspect yourself to see if the insulators are deteriorated. I suspect not.
Taking it for his word, replacing the shocks at this time is wise.

My LS400 is a '99 with 140k. It spent its entire life up until Oct. 2011 in Iowa & Ohio. I bought it in Oct. 2011 and live in San Diego. I trust the guy, he's a friend of a friend. He said it's not immediate but that they were metal to metal...just how severe I'm not really sure. He said of more concern were the strut rods as the bushings are shot...pretty common problem from what I've read. They quoted me $330 in labor to replace the bushings or $225 to replace the entire strut rods with the bushings. I'll most likely be supplying the parts from Sewell. Do these prices sound fair? I don't have the tools to do it myself and it's been years since I've done any sort of mechanic work.

if your car has seen any type of snow, those insulators can very well be deteriorated, and yes you should def replace the shocks if still original. bushings are a simple, but requires a press. you can def do them but if you don't have the tools to even remove the suspension, have them done professionally. that price seems steep for only the front!
