UCF1X camshaft pulley removal
Sometimes we don't have the needed special tool for a job, and need to improvise. A buddy helped me come up with this simple and effective idea. Use the timing belt and vice grips. In hindsight vice grips might not even be needed. I don't know if it's a bad idea to allow the camshaft pulleys to rotate in our non interference engines, but it doesn't seem like a necessarily good idea to me. You'll get the basic idea from the picture.
If the timing belt snapped or snapped trying this, you could probably cut a length of belt long enough to cover one pulley and hold it in place with a belt wrench or a chain wrench.
And as if it even needs to be said, don't plan on using this method if you're not replacing the timing belt.
The best I could describe instructions is wrap the belt from one pulley to the other and minimize slack in the belt. Hold the belt in a way to keep ion the pulleys and keep the pulleys from spinning. Do whatever it takes to break the nut loose - breaker bar, socket wrench, impact gun, breaker bar with pipe wrench...
If you're strong enough, this might be all you need.
This almost worked but I needed to make a slight modification which I forgot to take a picture of.
