You can use mobil 1 snythetic trans fluid I have 281,000 miles on my 91 ls400 and no problems I woudn't use Dexron 3 the mobil 1 will work just fine the Valvoline MaxLife ATFis a dextron 3 based fluid Valvoline does make a snythetic trans fluid and it is eaiser to get mobil 1 almost anywhere. my 86 toyota Cressida went 529,000 on mobil 1 in the trans changed it every 35,000 miles drain and fill twice or about 6 quarts you can change it 3 times and get almost 80-90% change out. I was told that the Cressida trans is very close to the first gen Lexus trans 90-94

mobile1 (i believe) and maxlife are spec'd for 3309 fluid (aka T-IV), so it will work alright.

maxlife will work fine for these tranny's..make no mistake about it..it says right on the bottle..toyota type 4. it has the correct additives and friction modifiers in it...would i use it? no, simply because i can get the factory fluid from the dealer for the same price or less and i work at napa auto parts and get a discount on this fluid..that being said just go to the dealer and get the fluid that they sell.

lexuss dealership too expensive? call the toyota dealership next door (or across town) and you'll see a significant price drop most of the time. oh the joys of the Lexus tax....

My experience is the Toyota branded fluid products are really good, so for something that needs to be changed no more often than transmission fluid and coolant, I just pay the slight premium for the Toyota product and rest assured there is none better.

How often should you change the transmission filter? From what I understand there is a type of screen/filter inside the transmission. I plan on doing a fluid change soon and was wondering if I should drop the pan and change it because of the high mileage of my car ('91 ls400 200k)

I changed my filter last year with over 210k. Fluid needed it bad was very brown. Ran it thru till new red came out and went back a few months later to drain and add 2 qts. And today i did the drain and fill 2 qts again. Looking very good and tranny is smooth still.
