personally I would check your timing belt if it doesn't look bad leave it alone... if something isn't broke don't mess with it.. my car has the original timing belt and i have 180 plus thousand miles on my car....my spark plug wires are original and have low resistance still.
the motor isn't a interference motor so if the timing belt does break it will only leave you stranded

You say "Not much of a mechanic...so will this cost me alot". Cost will determine on how much of this you can do yourself. http://www.lexls.com/tutorials/ has the tutorials you need to do most of the work. If you can twist a wrench, get dirty, and follow directions then you'll save a bundle of cash. If you can't then the shop will wack you on the labor charges and raise the price on parts. (They need to make money too) How much of a mechanic are you?

Ditto on Deanshark and if you go through that stuff and still have sputtering, you should check the fuel pumps and the fuel tank. I have an older BMW 535 that recently had a sputtering issue and it turned out to be a rusty tank from gas having sat in it for 10 years. I had to wind up replacing the tank and the fuel filter
Having older cars like these is only cost effective if you can do some of the work yourself.
