92 LS400 vs ES350

The interior might be larger but the ES is still a couple of inches shorter than the original LS in length. It is taller and wider.
The original LS had a 4.0 V-8 making 250hp. The current ES 350 has a 3.5 V-6 making 272hp or so. The ES is also faster.

one passed me the other day..the only problem i have is that it looks like a little LS 460..not much difference in body styles

there are a few discernible differences but not many..also resembles the camry

I'm doing so cause I owned a 92 LS400 and can't believe Lexus' entry level is now bigger and better. Additionally, having said that, I loved that LS, and so part of me says I'd love the ES350, and don't need a current day LS!

having been around many first gen LS and a fair few ES350s, yes. i can.
the reason for this is simple. the LS was always the flagship car, and every car was impeccable when it came off the line since it had the highest budget to produce (and sell). the ES simply doesnt and didnt.

I could say similar from the MX73 Cressida and the UCF10. IMO, the MX73 was the better built. The UCF1X was safer due to the standards of the time and that would apply to the later generations. The UCF2-3 were nicely built but read some of the comments regarding build quality at the higher miles when things begin to surface. The 460 though integrating lots of technology, there are enough passing comments about cheapened build qualities. All the threads about wind noise and then we had that valve spring...
As for the ES it has a similar situation. I've not really liked it from from 330 on. The car does look nice and there is a nice feature set though to me, the past decade I'm not seeing the cars the same way as I did. Perhaps I'm becoming more aware/picky or Toyota has managed to cut costs and while it is not totally night day, my perception notices it.
I'm sure well cared for samples will last 20 years. I'm not seeing many ES's of older generations in significant numbers. The UCF1X is still abundant well past 200K miles. Speaks well.

any other manufacturer where you see build quality increased? Honda?

New Es350 better than old Ls400...
Um NO!!
I had a 90 ls400 and currently have a 95 ls400
I had some major repairs done to my ls, and got a shiny new 2013 ES as a loner.
!!!!!!!I HATED IT!!!!!!!
Although it was more comfterble then my old Ls400, every aspect of the car was cheap as hell!! Poor fit and finish, crummy performance, awful stereo, it had horrible torque steer when accelerating as well.
It was total dog ****! And Lexus should be ashamed of themselfs for squeezing out a turd like the ES350.
My old LS400 is faster, bigger, more fun to drive, has a better factory stereo, quicker off the line and down the road, and will outlive the cheap ES350 I'm sure! I had the es350 for a week and really got to know the car. And I'm extremely disappointed with it.

I drove a last gen ES 350 as a loaner, it was ok but I'm not a FWD fan so it would not be a consideration. The ES/Windom doesn't hit the level of car that the LS is. The first gen LS's we in development for a long time and the production reflects the desire to produce a top tier product at that time. To still see them on the roads continues to speak how well engineered this model was-is and will be.
