it is not an easy job to do the lower EGR pipe, but not too bad if you have the right tools - there are specialty tools such as exotic ratchets and other tricky specialty tools that you likely have never even seen before that allow some people to do it easily, such as the mechanic at the dealership - with a typical homeowner's craftsman tool set, it is a nightmare to do yourself, if not close to impossible, due to limited access
all new cars are difficult to repair, and even some old cars are (Honda Prelude, Mitsubishi 3000, etc.)
the starter and the lower EGR are really the only 2 things that commonly break on an LS400 that are difficult to repair, I would have to say that overall, it is one of the easiest cars to repair
if you want access to the engine like the good old days, get a full size Chevy truck with a 6 cylinder engine!
Please help me out there. Btw, I replaced the starter a couple of years ago, which wasn't any fun at all; now the pipe. I'd never buy LS400 again: it's extremely hard to maintain. Really miss old American cars: you could sit inside the engine compartment doing whatever you wanted. Not any more because of the emission stuff.

My 95 LS400 and my 75 Cadillac certainly are different animals. But i will say that LS400s are actually easier to work on than some other cars of the same vintage. Although a few of the things on it are difficult, doing some work on a FWD V6 ES300 or RX300 will certainly make you miss your LS!

Did yours have an air pump? Because i only have three on mine.
The one thing about the LS400 I have concerns of is the low quality if the underhood rubber and plastics. I have worked on many cars over the years and this one is nutorious for hoses to shatter into peices and for the elecrical connections to crumble to bits. Its even worse than it was on my old 1990 tercel, and that car had some of the cheapest construction i have ever seen!
