Default '97...dies after idling and won't restart

'97 LS 400...have owned for four years and great car with no problems. Recently started dying if idling for more than 2-3 minutes, then sometimes wont restart for several hours. Now engine light comes on also. Has been in shop 3 times w no solution. Last time they said another customer had similar problems and started burning premium gas and prob went away. I have always burned regular, as did only other owner of car. I cant imagine this is a legit solution to prob. Any advice???

check your ICV. Take it off, run (+) jumpers to 2 middle prongs then ground the outside 4 prongs one at a time. if the plunger doesnt move in and out thats your problem.

Assuming you know the obvious is in good shape such as the plugs, and fuel system injectors, I would replace the IAC without checking it. Its cheap and if you have to pull it to check just replace it.

Sry but, Wow some bad advice. Don't check it, just change it??? Cheap????

jiggyy; Don't just go and change anything w/o checking it first, especially when something will cost $500 and it might not be the problem. As dvourthis said, check first. If it turns out to be the problem then, and only then, change it.

The "IAC" aka ICV is not cheap. It's over 700 from Lexus and over 500 online. Check it first. And no you can't clean it like on a ford (unless of course it's so dirty the plunger is stuck closed, highly unlikely) I talked to a Lexus mechanic when mine went bad and he said it's something he sees quite a bit and needs replacing.
