Sorry if it came out as criticism. I have been talking Swedish for a week and it takes a while to re-program by brain.

Total indeed has nice specs:

API SL/CF
ACEA A3/B4
MB-Approval 229.5
BMW LongLife 01
VW/Audi 502.00/505.00
GM-LLA025/B025 (level)
Most European OEMs

I read somewhere that this should be Group IV oil but who knows.

Pick any medium or big brand with suitable viscosity and specs and you are pretty much good to go.

for LS400, the two preferred viscosities according to a consensus of automotive and petroleum engineers are 5W-30 and 0W-30 - this is regardless of your local climate, so Finland or Dubai, same oil!

I am hoping one day 5W-20 and/or 0W-20 will be approved for our cars, but don't count on it, Toyota moves slow on back-speccing.

Interestingly, many oil engineering experts feel that the best 0W-20 on the market is the newish Toyota 0W-20 (custom blended for Toyota by Exxon Mobil)

So the preferred oil brand and weight for my 95 with 120,000 miles would be what??

I started reading this thread and its interesting but very long and old so I'm hoping to get the most up to date opinion.

I'm going to use the 90915-20004 Denso filter.

Where can one find that filter? It is my understanding that it has been repleced with 90915-YZZD3.

No citations no care. And definitely no "consensus".

On BobIsTheOilGuy.com (where many of the premier automotive and petroleum experts in the world hang out) - the citations are flowing all day long, the best oils and viscosities are quite clear to anyone who really wants to know and read up, but some folks are stuck in a 1985 way of thinking.

Those who would debate me on best oil grade have still failed to read and understand Motor OIl 101, and without basic knowledge, we can't have a debate!

The greatest confusion is because of the way motor oils are labeled. It is an old system and is confusing to many people. I know the person is confused when they say that a 0W-30 oil is too thin for their engine because the old manual says to use 10W-30. This is wrong.

My suggestion would be to run a few different viscosities and brands in your LS and do an oil analysis if you really want the facts, then post the results. Anything short of that is 100% conjecture and cannot be taken as fact, no matter what you post or where you read it.

How could you possibly know this, Cowboy?
Do you personally know who "the premier automotive and petroleum experts in the world" are? Do you have coffee with them or bounce their kids on your knee at family BBQ's?

Or are you assuming because you read that some guy on BITOG claims to be someone or work somewhere what he is posting is correct?

Any university level student can research and cite more than half of the sources posted on BITOG. Not sure how those citations make it reality. If I did a little digging and spent a little time, I could put together a rational and believable post on an internet forum suggesting anything, simply by being selective about my citations. Best part is 99.9% of people would believe it because they don't have the knowledge or understanding to refute or question what I posted. That still doesn't make what I posted true, simply because nobody is smart enough or cares enough to question me.

But more so because nobody in the history of the internet has ever lied about something; or claimed to be someone they weren't; took credit for someone else's work; or claimed they worked somewhere they haven't....

Unless you have bonified, peer-reviewed journals citations, than what you are saying it is indeed just conjecture and YOUR OPINION, Cowboy. If you have specific threads you have read on BITOG or studies you have found that pertain to the 1UZ and the recommended old grades, please post those links. I'm not going to waste my time sifting through an entire website to find something that may not even exist.
