What type of oil do you use? (The Mother thread)
#271
When I went through the diagrams earlier I came across this.
My Euro spec car should have this 15609-50031 oil filter bracket
and US spec a 15609-50010 (05/1989 - 08/1990) or 15609-50011 (09/1990 - 09/1994)
Both versions listed 90915-03005 as original oil filter but aftermarket brands seem to vary.
It looks like the original filter has evolved along the following "path":
90915-03005 -> 90915-20002 -> 90915-20004 -> 90915-YZZD3.

Thought this was funny and figured it is oil related. It is oil related.

Anybody here running Royal Purple 5W30? I'm considering rolling with that, and a 20-400 filter, for my next oil change. And also, is a 5qt. bottle good enough for a '99 LS, or should I get another quart to be safe?

That was a great success. I kind of want to see what the current commercial is... lol

if you had a newer car, of course thinner is even better, such as a 5W-20 or even a 0W-20, and in 0W-20 the new Toyota oil seems to ace everything at the moment.
the best weight for long life for our cars is 0W-30, but very limited choices of oils in that weight, German Castrol, being one example.
If you are curious as to why thinner oil is better, head on over to Motor Oil 101 and do a bit of reading up! - very enlightening! - and by the way, the climate where you live, surprisingly, is not a big factor in selecting the oil weight you should be using, contrary to popular belief! (the article explains why)
As far as the best oil filters for the LS400, I put together a nice list of all of the best, after cracking open a couple of dozen, and inspecting the insides - and the bonus is, many are 1 size oversize!
Right now, my favorite filter for our LS400's is, surprisingly, the Motorcraft FL-400S, due to it's superior anti-drainback valve, which seems to get more oil to critical top end engine parts faster than any other filter I have seen on a cold engine, saving wear. This feature is far more critical to long engine life than specs like "so many microns" filtration, as the vast majority of wear happens at startup!

based on UOA's, (used oil analysis) most of the serious oil geeks at BobIsTheOilGuy.com seem to like Pennzoil Ultra better than any oil out there, at least in 5W-30 - but it can be a bit hard to find. Toyota has back-specced most of the older 90's models for at least 5W-20, but unfortunately not our LS400's yet. - and no, the oil gurus at Bob's didn't forget to look at Royal Purple in depth! - or Amsoil, or Redline, etc.

Thank you for all the informational links! Ironically, my main basis for hearing about Royal Purple ,as a company, was through your post about oil filters, and I happened to like it because it was (named after) my favorite color That aside, most people seem to like it a lot, and rate it well (though that doesn't really tell me anything as far as performance with my car goes) but I'm feeling confident enough about running it on my next oil change. One other mentioned Royal Purple 5W30 in this thread, but that was "years ago", so to speak.
as far as the oil, it's very good oil, but not really worth the price, but purple colored oil is kind of cool, to do at least once!

I use smaller versions of these Japanese filters in my 7afe engine, use 20004 on Sienna. Cheaper than some Fram, Bosch,Purolators. For some reason in WI winters, engines are quieter with this combo.
