5w-30 is what is recomended for our enigine right? I was thinking 10w30 for the summer.
The Land Cruiser guys say Shell Rotella T 5w-30 Syn has the best wear characteristics. What does everyone here use. My car has been converted from Dino to Syn blend and to full syn over the last few oil changes at the dealer. So I want Syn in there. So what do you guys use?
ive just been reading with amusment all these differing opinions about what oil to use. Why don't you just run what the owners handbook says ? i have a 1998 LS400 and my owners h/book says use 20/50 so i use 15/50 full syn (you cant get 20/50 full syn) no where in the owners handbook does it say to use any lower than that.

owner's manuals are tailored to the weather of each region. mine recco's 5w-30, which is why i can get away with 0W-30 German Castrol Syntec....

I'm away from my book right now but oil technology has changed in the past 15 years since my car was build. Plus they don't always tell you what is best for the engine, sometimes they recomend 5w30 for better fuel mileage over there whole fleet of vehicles to meet govermental requiremenets. Now maybe if this engine has real tight tolerances a thicker oil wouldn't flow well so a 5w is needed.

I've tried all sorts of oil, but I think I've stuck to Redline for the longest time. Just compare the stats of Redline to other oils and it's obvious. 5w-30 that is.

I have been running mobil 1 since 1986 put 526,000 miles on a toyota cressida all the oil I used was mobil 1 in the motor ps rear end and transmission no problems I ran 5w30 also in my 1990 Lexus it as 238,000 and again I run it in everything and no problems I use the new exteneded 15,000 mobil 1 and I run it from 15,000 to 18,000 miles I use a ams oil filter, my car is a sales car driving about 100-300 miles a day. I have seen a 1990 lexus LS 400 go 568,000 miles on dino oil keep all your fluids changed what ever oil you use the car was built last a long ways some where in California some guy has topped 1 million miles on the same engine unable to locate him at this time....

The owner's manual for my '98 recommends 5w-30.

NSW = New South Wales, yes?

Some manufacturers spec different grade oils for different geographical locations.

perhaps, but i can't believe lexus wouldn't tell you what oil's best for its engines.. however i never considered running a 5w in my motor.... i'm now asking lots of 'experts' about this.... i'll let you know

yes, but what temperature is your climate ? 20w/50 is for -7c to +38c which is my climate (Sydney Australia)
and 5w/30 is for -30c to +10c is for very cold climate (Northern Canada perhaps?) and this is in the 1998 LS400 handbook.. .. ..

The temperature where I live is pretty mild. It may get down into the 30's (F) in the winter and will routinely get into the 90's and 100's during the summer.

Here's a poor scan of my owner's manual.

I use Mobile 10-30 syn. It works fine, and seems to not break down as fast as conventional.

Default Oil for 98

This is probably opening a can of worms.......I'm picking up a 98 ls w/75k miles this weekend and will do an oil change when I get her home. I have successfully used Mobil oil and filters on previous cars , putting many miles on them. What's popular here? I've recently read about Mobil 1 changing it's formula for the worse.

Welcome to the forum. Congrats on your new purchase. I use Mobil 1 but haven't heard of the formula change.

Here is a recent thread talking about oil, you can jump in there:
