Default Swapping 4 speed auto for 6 speed auto?

Hey guys,

I've got a UCF11 and I've been thinking about swapping out the old 4 speed transmission for an LS430's A761E in the future.

Just was wondering if anyone has experimented with something like this. An entire powertrain swap is a lot of money but I can have one of these transmissions used for less than $1k, plus installation.

It'd be nice to have an extra 2 cogs in there cuz that 4 speed really does show how in-convenient it can be sometimes especially during city driving.

I was also wondering if there were any Lexus or VIP meets in the North Texas/DFW area.

Thanks everyone.

won't work.

transmissions are fully electronically controlled, you're talking about putting an OBDII/CAN transmission into an OBDI car. not going to happen without the ECU off the newer car, which wont be compatible with the old motor, or with the old chassis harness.

possible? yes. But ridiculously labor and cost intensive.

The best place to ask this would be lextreme.com forums they specialize in Lexus v8s and I'm sure they could point you in the right direction.

From a newer Lexus no, but a fairly common mod is to transplant the 5/6 speed manual transmissions from older supras with an adapter kit. I would wonder if the auto trans from those cars might work as well? Something to ask over there.

Edit: just found out even the mark 4 supra carried a 4 speed auto, willing to consider a 5-speed?

Would the 6 speed work for our 98-00 LS's? Just wondering since the 01-03 430's had the same tranny as the 98-00.

Completely forgot about the OBDII to I.

Looks like ill have to live with the 4 speed until I can afford my dream swap: a 5.7 Tundra motor and 6 speed auto. The LS570. Haha in my dreams. But hey you never know.]

Or a 5 speed out of a 1995 would probably work...

'95 is also OBDII and electronically controlled.

the 5.7L 3ur won't even bolt on to a uz bellhousing last i checked, and its ECU would complain as well!

Well if I were ever to do a swap like that I would replace the drivetrain anyway.

The whole drivetrain would be the easier move with the ECU. The LS460 is a pretty motor.

it would be easier to swap in a 6-speed manual transmission, or a 2-speed Powerglide.

I like the idea of a manual transmission LS! Would probably wake the motor up some. If you wanted to stay auto you could always look into a chevy or ford trans. Transdapt can make adapters for almost any trans and engine combo. If you were looking for something with 6 gears than you are going to need some kind of stand alone computer for it as well. Hot Rod guys do wacky swaps all the time so alot of the stuff should be available or can be custom made. Like someone else said you can put almost anything you want in there it's all just a matter of time and money

Thanks guys. lol been a while since I last checked this thread. If I don't end up going to a powertrain out of a late model GS400 (300HP and 5 speed auto) then I might try to hunt down a 5 speed out of a 95 LS.

I was thinking about the 2UZ swap, but I like the aluminum block on the 1UZ and the fact that the bottom end is more built for performance.

Now a 3URFE with an 6 speed auto.........lol can you say LS570? That would be my dream swap. One day...
