Default Brake Light Switch - '90 LS400

My brake lights don't come on at all and I have to push that little Shift-Release button every time I want to shift out of park. Meanwhile my rear lights com on just fine when I turn on the headlights.

I suspect that my problem is the brake light switch and I've ordered a new one.

But, geez, the old one is in a tough spot to get to! There's a little black plastic box with a little wiring harness coming out of it and it's in the way of the brake light switch. I don't know what the box is for and I can't figure out how to detach the box. It's probably a no-brainer but if someone can give me a clue as to how to get this out, I'd be forever grateful.

Shame on me, but I will also check to see if there's a fuse for this thing, but I don't think this is the problem. Is there a relay I should be checking also?

Any tips would be appreciated.

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION OF STOP

1. REMOVE STOP LIGHT SWITCH
(a) Remove instrument panel subassembly cover under No.1
and brake pedal return spring.
(b) Disconnect connector.
(c) Remove a nut and switch.
2. ADJUSTMENT OF STOP LIGHT SWITCH
(See step on page BR−4)
3. INSTALL STOP LIGHT SWITCH
For installation, follow the removal procedure in reverse.

So says the manual.....
