transmission filter change
1997 lexus ls 400 170k on it. have been draining the tranny pan every 15k and replacing it type 4 . any one know how long the filters in the transmissions are good for?

there are no filters in the transmission to speak of, what there is is a fine screen mesh, which over the years can become clogged and/or broken. if you've NEVER replaced it, go ahead and order one, then every time you drop the pan just take it out, clean it out with brake cleaner, let it dry, make sure there aren't any holes, and put it back in.

dualquad, change the trans filter. It will be covered in a layer of metallic silt and the magnets on the bottom of the pan will be overloaded. It's cheap - $5.50 or so at RockAuto, and easy to do. Just do it. Trust me on this. A loaded up transmission filter will make your car break down in the middle of the road.
Sidenote: Mine was so clogged that the transmission stopped working. Fully clogged. 180k
