1999 Ls400 Needs Left Catalytic Converter Replacement, but $3600 at the dealer...
Hi,
Dealer (Lexus of Riverside, CA, USA) estimated $3600 for the followings:
3 oxygen sensors, left catalytic converter, Y pipe, labor & tax.
Obviously, they recommended the right side catalytic converter replacement as well.
I really want to keep the car (for sentimental reason..., also it is kinda hard to sell a Canadian car in U.S.A).
Does anyone know any good non-dealer place I can take care of this?
I live in Redlands, CA, anywhere around LA is fine.
Thanks,
Q

I replaced my Y pipe for $800, installed. It was a California spec, so it had the catalytic converter built into it. If you don't have the cat in the Y pipe, it should be considerably less than that aftermarket. For the two cats, I think I paid less than $300 each for them. They were Wagner aftermarket cats. I would agree with them on replacing both cats. If one is gone, the other one won't be too far behind.

The reason was:
- Engine check light is on.
- a little bit of shaking noise from the underneath
- smells funny
- I just knew it's catalytic converter before I went to dealer
So.. does anyone know any good private mechanics/shops I can trust around LA who can work on Lexus well?
Thanks,

I just purchased the y pipe and both upper cats super cheap. Check out this site www.discountexhaustsystems.com. I was happy with the fit and the quality as well as time of delivery. However i did order all my gaskets from felpro. The ones that came with the parts looked pretty crummy. Hope this helps
