And my, did the horn blow.

I took the battery out of my dear 400LS for the winter. When I went to replace it, the security system went nuts. I pushed every button on my key fob. Steve of Lexus of Wayzata told me to try putting the key in the ignition or the door and cycle it. This didn't work either.

I HOPE have haven't done anything too stupid / expensive.

HELP.

Put the key in the ignition. See if it cranks. If it does great.

Undo the battery terminal and reconnect it. See if any change.

With the key NOT on, pull the EFI fuse.. and wait. Then replace and turn the key back on.

This shouldn't be a problem. Removing the battery and replacing it should not trigger the alarm, and if it does the remote trigger/key should restore it to normal function.

Maybe others can chime in here with an equally odd experience and resolution.

The guy who sold me the battery sold me one with the posts reversed. The guy a Lexus claimed the worst thing I could have done by wiring it backwards is blow some fuses.

Well, I got the right battery in and it starts but yes there are some blown fuses--the steering wheel won't extend and the radio won't turn on.

What fuses did I blow? I looked briefly at the fuse box under the hood but nothing is obviously fried.

Any advice is welcome!!!

I'll try again when there is daylight. I have a .pdf version of the repair manual--about 200 pages are devoted to electrical systems.

I certainly never figured a freaking battery replacement would turn into such a hassle. sheesh.

At least the engine runs so I didn't screw up those systems.

make sure to actually pull each fuse to check if its blown, its hard to tell by looking at it while its mounted...

I like a cheap fuse tester -- Green light if there is a connection, none if its blown. Keeps you from having to pull all those tiny fuses


Reversed battery terminals -- yeesh. There is a new one to ask folks on such an odd problems. Your mistake is our knowledge gain.

Glad you figured it out, a few fuses later and things should be just fine.

Actually, I figured nothing out.

I found three fuses that had blown. But the dash won't light up, the steering wheel won't extend, the radio doesn't work, the locks won't trigger. I am in a stage of near panic. What HAVE I done to my beautiful car?

Oh, I DID replace the fuses. And I checked all those impossible to see fuses inside of the cabin. Oh MY!

well the tilt/telescope motor, dome, and radio iirc are all on one fuse so....

Do you know which one? My dome light works (or some interior lights)

I am going to sleep on this. Cars are not fixed by folks in a panic!

On my first gen the fuse you need to replace is in the engine compartment. You haven't mentioned what year your car is though, so I don't know if that will help you.
