2000 Lexus LS400 Turn off Automatic Steering Wheel Tilt
I have a 2000 Lexus LS400
Does anyone know how to turn off the automatic steering wheel tilt and
still allow you to manual tilt the steering.
Thanks
Larry

Sure -- I didn't know you knew about the First gen's.. and I don't see why they would remove the switch on later models. It now requires a special tester with a card. That is removing convenience imo.
What about this feature makes you want to turn it off? I'm curious.

You can't turn it off at all on 1995-1997 models without physically disconnecting power to the tilt/telescopic motor.

I've got a 2000 and if I could easily turn it off, I would. I don't have any problem getting in and out and I just don't need it. Plus, I'd rather get in and go instead of waiting for it to do its thing.

A common reason to turn the auto tilt/telescope feature off is if there is a failure in the tilt/telescope mechanism. A fairly common problem with the tilt/telescope feature of the 98 to early 2000 LS400 can cost up to $2,000 to fix. I previously posted the TSIBs about these issues on this forum.

If you want an easy way to turn it off pop the cover off around the key cylinder. The their is a single wire leaving a tab on the side. Pull it off and the key will no longer activate it on a 98-00. The only other wire goes to a ring around the outside of the cylinder for the immobilizer and the other is a bulb to light around it.

Good tip there skperformance.
I happen to like the vertical action of the steering wheel on entering exiting the vehicle, and I never have a problem getting in or out due to it 'doing its thing'.
I can get in with it down completely or out the same way. In fact I commonly cannot or do not get out before it has gone up.
It takes , in my vehicle, a second maybe 1500ms to go from bottom to top.. I'd have to pretend my car was on fire to really have it get in my way
Has yours slowed down ?
To each his own, If mine didn't have the 'off' feature I would probably try and figure out how to turn it off just because of that fact ..
Mine is 14yrs old and it moves at the same speed as it did new. ( Or same speed as an 05 LS.) -- Only thing I can compare it to.
