Default 98LS - Noise from suspension when braking

The noise sounds like it is coming from the suspension system (struts, sway bar, control arms, etc). The car only has 85K so I doubt is would be worn out struts already. The car rides very smooth with no noise during regular driving. The noise only occurs during braking. The brakes have less then 10K on them so I would assume it is not coming from the brake system.

Thoughts?

most likely strut bar bushings but you need to be more specific as to what kind of sound you're experiencing.

What type of sound do "worn out" strut bars bushings make?

You will hear a heavy clunk when going over parking lot humps or a driveway curb. It's worse if you are braking at the time.
I don't think that mileage is as much an issue with these as age...the rubber breaks down.
New strut rods complete with bushings can be had for a little over $100 ea and they can be installed in an afternoon with basic tools.

I see that I can get just the bushings (less the entire bar). Is this an option or is purchasing the entire bar assembly a better way to go? below is a link to a video I found that shows the steps for replacement. Any other steps that I should be aware of?

Good video tutorial - I changed the whole bar on my 95 rather than go with just the bushings. To me it was easier.

I bought new rods and replaced them myself as well. Shock bolts were PITA to undo. Do you know if the old rods of any value or they just go to trash?

I would just note that I encountered the same issue on my 97 LS 400 at around 85k miles. Rear bushings a little earlier. I definitely drove that car harder than I should have, though.

ive noticed that its more age/weather than anything else when it comes to determining the rate of failure on lexus rubber bushings
