I've seen both the engine air filters and the cabin air filters running for about 8-10 dollars each on ebay while the OEM filters run about $30 each from an online retailer like lexus-parts.

There's even charcoal cabin filters! I laughed when I found these online but maybe they are useful, I don't know.

1) Is there a noticeable difference in manufacturing and material quality with these cheaper filters?

2) Have any of you used, seen or compared some of the above mentioned aftermarket filters side by side with the OEM ones?

Sometimes aftermarket can be just as good/better and sometimes much worse. Since the OEM filters are about 3x the price, I thought I'd ask around.

engine air filter=OEM or high quality aftermarket (apex'i *custom or KN only)
cabin air filter=use the OEM one uy have to cut a new one out of the big AC filters u buy from homedepot for your house. you can get like 3-4 at elast out of the middle-sized ones.

Thanks! I'll go with the OEM for the engine and check out home depot's available a/c filters.

Sounds like a cheap, low quality alternative but probably the same thing.

actually the AC filters used in your home are MUCH MUCH better quality than using OEM filters. heres the link i was looking for earlier.

i suggest double or triple layering the AC filter material.

Like PD said I have been using home air filters (with a high MERV rating) and they are certainly better tahn OEM and cheaper. The ones I buy look like a blue sponge and have a high efficiency rating to block debris, dust, pollen, etc. Now if I could just close my moonroof and windows they would actually do me some good!
