One small klick begins disaster for engine
Hi all.
Had a shim slip out of one #4 cylinder exhaust valve. It got hung up with the valve stem and locked the valve open. This ruined the head. It turns out that
head work is so expensive that for my '91 with 150000 miles on it's better to replace the engine with a salvaged one. I got a 50000 engine for $1250 and it will be about $1500 to install. Don't do like I did and wait for a better time to stop the clicking.
Sad and Broke

Did your engine have a "klick,Klick,Klick" type noise at idle before this happened? Is so, it sounds like the exhaust valve clearance on cylinder #4 was wildly loose and provided enough clearance for the valve adjusting shim to slip out.
Do you mind telling us how you were driving when the shim slipped out? In other words, was the engine spinning slow or at high rpm? decelerating? etc. Thanks

Puredrifter, my usual repair shop wouldn't touch this job. I'm trying a new guy and I hope every thing works out. I found engines from $500 to $2500 around the southeast on www.car-parts.com. This one comes with 12 months warrenty so I took the middle ground. There are not many choices for Lexus repair around
here so they can get premium prices.
