Ticking sound coming from my engine?
So i just bought a 98 gs400 118k miles, the seller told me the engine always did that ticking noise for as long as he can remember, that doesent seem normal to me, a few people heard it and think its my valve, i called lexus they said i need a valve adjustment probally wuth that many miles, im due for an oil change, what would a valve adjustment cost? Anybody else have this problem? Its very faint ticking noise at idle and when i hit the gas it speeds up ticking very fast, no check engine lights are on, could he of disabled the check engine light? When i turn the key the check engine light comes on then dissapears just like it should, is this ticking noise something serious? Got me a little worried...

Before you go get a valve adjustment, remove your engine cover and while the engine is running, listen closely to your ignition coils. You can also touch them with the insulated end of a screwdriver and if you can feel any pulsation, that will be where your tick is coming from. You will then need to remove the coil and inspect your spark plug. I had a damaged spark plug causing a loud tick and eventually led to a miss in the engine. I have 242k on my car and never had a valve adjustment. No ticking sound since I replaced the defective plug,

Unless its included in the scheduled maintenace, I hav'nt had it done. I have had all scheduled maint done at the dealership and they have never mentioned anything about valve adjustment. Car still runs strong, doesnt burn oil, and averages 21mpg per tank with about 50/50 hwy/city

As qgoat said while running at idle look in the engine bay and try to isolate where the noise is coming from and feel around, carefully of course, and you might find the ticking component. I do not know enough to comment about a valve adjustment but my car made a ticking noise that was coming from the fuel injectors or at least felt the pulsing from them, poured some seafoam and gunned from 0-60 a few times and haven't heard it in about 40k miles. I am currently at about 109k. Flooring the car helps burn off crap on the valves so I'm told but it worked for me.

Valve adjustment is 5.9 hours for labor!
how many miles when you had the car?
what kind of oil you are using? brand and viscosity?
