Default instrument cluster transplant

how feasible would it be to transplant the instrument cluster from a UCF20 97-00 LS400 (the one that shows current MPG) into a UCF10 90-92 LS400?

is it possible at all or am i just dreaming?

that's the one i'd like

Feasibility? Probably zero, although it can probably be done if your wallet is bottomless. There is a lot more to getting the multifunction display of the 98-00 LS400 to work than just transplanting the gauge cluster. One of the most basic issues is that odometer on the 90-92 LS is mechanical -- not electronic as on the later LS. The multifunction display on the later LS400's displays all sorts of messages based on many sensors in the car. There aren't even any brake wear sensors on the gen 1 LS so how could you make the multifunction display of the later LS work on just that one feature? I'd bet that it would cost far less to buy a newer LS with the multifunction display than to make it work on a gen 1 LS.

The multifunction display in my 00 LS is mainly a toy. I didn't have it in the 90 LS I drove for almost 14 years and I don't think it is very useful. Maybe that is why the multifunction display is so much smaller on the LS430.

But if I could get my phone information (directory and caller ID, etc.) to display on the multifunction display in the gauge cluster like on some Europe-spec BMW's, then I think the multi-function display would be truely useful.

true, its one of those things you miss because you dont have, but once you have, you never really use. I used to set it at current MPG, and leave it there to help me take it easy while driving. Now that I have the GS, i have to access it through the Navi screen which is a pain in the rear.

Ah, never thought it'd be as complicated as all that.

The only reason it interested me is because lately i've been getting consistently poor(er) than usual mileage while driving the same way i usually do (trying to keep revs under 2.5k) and never getting anything over 16-17mpg combined with about an even split on highway/city miles, so i wanted to see current mileage to help me take it even easier
