Default Different idea on installing i-pod

So I got a 94 LS400 with tape deck - no cd changer, and no cd changer controls. I looked around the forum and it seems like I have four different options:

1) Use tape player adapter for i-Pod
2) Use FM modulator for i-Pod
3) Replace the headunit with one that has cd controls and use 1/8" jack for i-pod
4) Replace the headunit and add cd-changer, forget i-Pod

However, I think that the first two options take too big of a hit on sound quality, and option 4 is costly and obsolete. Option 3 is probably the best way, but it still involves cost to purchase new headunit.

Here's my idea. What if I was to disconnect the audio wires from the tape and wire them to an i-pod, or any other device for that matter. Then, I put any tape into the tape player, and it spin the tape, keeping the amps on, but no sound will come from the tape because its audio wires are connected to i-pod which I will use instead. What do you guys think, is it doable?
