Shifting from Park to Drive
My 1990 LS400 has been in my family since early 1990. The problem I am experiencing is very hard engagement when shifting from Park into Drive. Oddly, shifting into Revers is very normal. The car doesn't show any high RPM's, yet it still engages with a "leap". I'm afraid to drive it this way for a long period of time because I don't want to tear up the differential or anything... much less the tranny itself. Does anyone have a clue as to what the problem is? I haven't taken it to a dealership because they have ridiculous prices for everything. Thanks.

It began doing this like 3 months ago. Also, I should add that the silky smooth shifting which used to be undetectable is now noticeable. Also, I don't think it's the transmission that is the problem. The problem seems to be related to the differential in some way.

Thanks for that information. I will begin checking those things out as soon as I get some time. Right now the car is parked in the garage, so I'm not driving it. I have an economy car that I drive around town. I will keep the club updated. ;-)
