1991 LS 400 Alternator
Hey, I'm a newbie to the lexus world and i need some help. I need a writeup on how to replace the alternator. Any help would be great, but if anyone has a writeup, it would be the best.
Thanks

i don't have the answer to your specific question, but if the alternator is gone, look up prior posts on the power steering pump. this could easily be the cause of the alternator going. there shouldn't be more than a thousand or so prior posts on this topic. this is one of the major design flaws in the ls. it pays to know about it.

Think about rebuilding your alternator ...rather than buying a remanufactured or new one.....they are quite expensive......
Any good auto electric shop should be able to rebuild your existing alternator...

rebuild instructions
I bought a LS 400 about a year ago, and of course my power steering has leaked all over it. I would greatly appreciate instructions on how to rebuild the alternator and maybe even how to rebuild the power steering pump.

Regarding the PS pump, it seems everyone eventually has problems with the idle-up valve. Many have problems with the o-ring between the reservoir and pump leaking. Some actually need a new pump. It sounds like many people see a leak there and just replace the pump. This does take care of all 3 possibile problems, but may not be necessary. But yes, you do want to get the PS leak taken care of if you want to preserve your new alternator.
If you're able to rebuild the pump yourself, you can save some $$ that way. I did it on mine and it was trickier than I expected. But in the end it was just that the o-rings and seals had cooked over time and were too hard to seal properly.
