LS430 Factory Rebates & bad resale value (more)

My dad was just about to buy a new 2001 740i becuase they are offering them loaded with nav & phone for $52k! Seems there is $7500 factory money attached, and dealers are discounting to make the rest.
However, the local Lexus dealer just advertised LS430's for $48k! I have to there's factory money being tossed at this - right?
My point is that the BMW 740i is at the end of it's life cycle (hence the discounts) and has had good resale value.
The LS430 is a brand new car and their doing deep discounts already! What gives? My dad wants to trade his '98 LS400 (with 35k miles) in on it and they offered $25k. Thinking the dealer was lowballing him, we advertised in the auto trader and newspaper at $30k and couldn't get any bites, Whats wrong with this picture? Where's the great resale they used to have in the pre-95 days?
He's uncertain about taking a chance with the LS430, in case they can't maintain a $50k+ price long term.
Any comments? Anyone know how to find out exactly what the factory money deal is?

aussie2u,
That's the point I was trying to make at the other thread. That Lex's resale value is just WAY too low after a couple years. Theres a lot of people selling their '98 $50k cars at $22k now and they are begging to get rid of it.
A lot of people doesn't seem to believe it but it's oh so true. Kelly Blue Book might quote a 40k resale value but people won't take it unless you sell it at 33k or less. Yes, I still believe German cars held it's value longer than Japanese cars.
Here is the thread.

Good day Mate,
are you from down under? i lived in Melbourne(doncaster, vic.) for many years during my youthdays.
you are right, 740s are such a bargian right now due to the fact that they are not selling well and they are at the last year of model cycle. but its resale would def be hurt with the new car factory rebate. just imagine, whould you buy a 2000 740i for ~$50k used when you can have a brand new 2001 for $53k?
i am very surprised at the sales level of LS430. i would attribute this fact due to slow down of economy, many luxury cars are not selling well. which dealer is offering $48k for ls430? brand new? can i have their #s?
my dad is also interested in the ls430. he almost signed on a 740il for the price you mentioned.
your dealer is def. "low balling" your ls400. but i cannot believe you cannot sell it yourself at mid $30k. i sold my 98 ls400 last may w/15kmiles, advertised in nation wide AUTO TRADER for $35(they cam eot my house, took pics, and also post the ad on the internet free for me). within 2 weeks, i received more than 10 inquiries, some from as far as new york. the final selling price was $46,500.
one thing about car market, especially the luxury ones, is that whenever there is model change, the previous model would take a bit more hit in price. like people said, cars are depreciable goods. my point is, find the car you guys like, get the best deal, or whatever you think is reasonable, and enjoy the ride. i would jump at the chance of getting a ls430 for less tha $50k.
as far as finding out the exact money rebate from the factory, this is very difficuly almost to the point of impossible unless your dealer is willing to share the info with you.
when i bought the ls400 in 98, the msrp was $58k, i paid $49k +tax +fees because the dealer i went to was willing to use to factory to dealer incentive to cover the cost. however, during that time, there were other dealers would not shared with me those rebates at all.
as buyers, my words to them are always timing and patience-the ball is always in your court. unless you want something that are limited production, then that would be another story.

LS430 Value
Glad to see there are deals in some parts of the country but definitely NOT in Atlanta. When I picked up my car in April(I ordered mine in January), my dealer had 1 on the lot and 4 others already sold and ready for pickup(they were ordered just like mine). Today's Atlanta paper has an article about the decrease in luxury cars sales nation-wide EXCEPT for the LS430. I paid full sticker put I plan on keeping it until the wheels fall off.

Good for buyer not seller
I started out looking at LS's and the dealer with out much dealing was at $36K for a '99 with 22K miles no nav or wood steering wheel. The RX's holding value well because of SUV crazeI would have liked that car but my budget was 30K max. My IS fully loaded with low miles (MSO exec car -never titled) fit the bill. I will always look to low milage Lexus in future. Exeptional cars.
