Question LS 400 Air Suspension Conversion

I have a 1990 LS400 and the front air suspension is leaking. The dealer is checking it out today, but I expect him to tell me it will cost $1000 to replace each one. I went to Strutmasters Web site and they office a conversion kit to conventional hydraulic struts for $745. The recommend you convert all four. Has anyone out there done this conversion and if so what was the result?

Update on 10/05/2004 - The dealer wanted $1250 to replace the the front left air shock, so I went to a local mechanic who has serviced cars for 25 years to see if he would be willing to do the strutmaster conversion. He had never converted a Lexus, but thought it could be done. I ordered the struts and they were delivered UPS in three days. Two days later all four struts were converted for $340. Instructions came with the kit and they can be downloaded from lextreme's Web site. The work was done a week ago and the ride is great. I kept the good air shocks so if any one needs them we can work out a bargan price as long as you cover the shipping. The UPS charge from Strutmasters in North Carolina to my home in northern Illinois was $50.00.

Smile Welcome to the forums...

Lextreme has done this conversion. Link to his write-up/review.

I did the Strutmasters conversion, too. It was relatively easy to do. It took me a total of 12 hours (taking my time) to complete. 4 for the front and 8 for the rear. The ride quality is equivalent to the sport setting of the stock a.s. The shocks that ship with the kit are Tokiko Blues.

Highly recommend the conversion. Talk to Garry Moore at Strutmasters.

I maybe interested in your shocks, send me a PM with price and I'll figure shipping. Thanks

So from what I understand, you can't lower your car with lowering springs such as Eibach if you have air suspension. Right?

Correct, the only way would be to swap out the air suspension with the spring/shock combo.
