any1 ever had a problem with the rear main seal leaking?
just got word from my mechanic that my 91 had a real main seal leaking
*just for all u who dont know who that is its the seal inbetween the engine and the transmission*
any1 got any ideas and prices advice etc and has this happened t any1 else

My rear main seal is leaking a tiny bit. In order to replace the seal, you have to take the transmission out, and it's a 0„5500 job, which is closer to $900 at today's exchange rates.
As long as the oil leak isn't major, you could live with it. If you change over to synthetic oil, it will make it worse since the synthetic oil is thinner and finds leaks more easily.

Oh yes, mine leaked half a year ago. First, it was a few drops then it became a big mess underneath the car. Replaced the oil seal DIY and now she is clean. Be sure to check the EGR pipe for cracks while the mechanic is at it.

hi,
bought my 92 about 18 months ago w/ 84k and it was dry. i switched to mobil 1 and it started dripping a bit. what i've discovered is that 5w30 will leak, whereas 10w30 will not. so guess which i run now??
