Kansas: I definitely don't plan on "modding". I'm much too happy with the factory product to mess around with it.<s>
Bluestar: Thanks for the enhancements list. I believe that it DOES have HID's! The guy wasn't for sure but said that they're brighter and whiter than his wife's car which makes me think it does.
Get this, when I took it for a test drive, I turned on the lights to check at a parking lot but they didn't appear to be on (middle of the day). So, I squatted down and nearly blinded myself when I got right in front of the lights.<heh, heh> I guess HID's are HIGHLY directional?!
It also has side airbags (which has become a more important issue for us) and the Nakamichi. I guess I don't have a refined enough ear as the sound system doesn't really seem much different than the sound in my old LS?!

Good decision on the 98 LS. Please make sure to get it check out at the Lexus dealer before you sign the check. I mean check for body damage, service records and so on.
Just look for some thing simple, like, cup holder(front and back), seat belts retact properly, radio display and tires wear. Anyway..

Hackman: You are absolutely right by buying the '98. You will love it. Here are *key* features in the 3rd gen (98 - 00) that you won't find in the '95:
1998-2000 (1995-1997)
5-speed tranny (4-speed tranny)
VVT-i (non-VVT-i)
290hp (260hp)
HID (NA)
Nak (NA)
side airbags (NA)
Nav (NA)
better suspension
At $18.5K, that is a sweet deal. Enjoy the new ride, and welcome to CL.
congratulations

btw, Nakamichi was available as an option on the '95. Also, Nakamichi prohibited interfacing their units with navigation systems, so 98-00 cars with navi had the Pioneer system. This was a key reason why Lexus switched premium audio partners to Mark Levinson starting in the 2001 model year.

I thought the reason why lexus chose to drop nak in favor of Mark L is because mark L was proven better, and nak was asked to do the basic stereo systems, but refused to lower themselves to anything less than the "highest stereo offered."

Using the imperial - metric conversion, 1kw = 1.36bhp (rounded off). So 260bhp = approx. 191kw.....which is what Lexus quoted for the original 1st Gen UCF10 LS400 engine (at least here in Australia). The 2nd gen UCF20 1995 LS400 engine (at least according to aussie specs) makes 204kw, or approx. 277bhp. Again, the 1997-2000 LS400s quoted 210kw / 285bhp in this market, a "massive" 6kw increase. I've driven both, yes there is a difference in performance, but it's due to the torque spread and transmission (400Nm v 375Nm) rather than outright power.
