NEW BATTERY suggestions?
hey everyone,
i'm in the market for a new battery for my 1993 LS400. i'll have a small system in the trunk and i'm gonna ask people at "the12vol.com" forum which they recommend and hopefully one will cross-reference.
so that's it really. which battery do you recommend?
thanks,
d

If your thinking of buying Optima batteries, dont. They are just over price batteries IMO. Some of my friends had them and had problems with them.
Go with Interstate Mega-Tron Plus, well priced reliable battery.
Interstate Mega-Tron Plus
Weight: 50 pounds
Length: 11 inches
Width: 6.88 inches
Height: 8.75 inches
Cranking Amps: 1000
Cold Cranking Amps: 800
Voltage: 12
Termination: A

I bought a Sears Diehard, and have been very happy with it.
The Lexus V8 needs 720 amps of cranking power, so you really need to make sure you have a proper battery, which is the same size as your battery holder box. Do not let someone sell you a cheaper or smaller battery.

These days most better batteries are all pretty good. DIEHARD is my choice, however.

I have read where "Interstate" batteries are the highest rated with Comsumer reports.
I tried to get one of these, but the LS uses a rare type of battery with the terminals on oposite sides from normal batteries. When I could not find the proper Interstate, I went to Sears and bought the Diehard.

Yes, the Sears Diehard is the full size of the battery box. It is the largest battery I have ever seen!
I actually measured the old one, and when visiting auto parts stores looking for a replacment, I wanted to make sure I was not sold a battery which is supposed to be a replacment, but is shorter than the fatory OEM battery, and the battery box.

i went with interstate. he gave me the wrong one. either he didn't grab the one the book told him, or the interstate parts book was wrong. the one he gave me had a 550 CCA reading (i read somewhere on here that the LS400 needs 720 CCA), AND it was too short by a good 3 to 4 inches!

He sold you the wrong battery. I know Interstate has the larger battery, it is just not well stocked with most dealers. You really need the extra amps. When your smaller battery gets a little used, you may have starting problems. The LS needs as much craking power as any car ever built.

Is this statement correct ? Or where to verify this ? There isn't any spec in the owner's manual.
I just checked my diehard battery and it has only 500 CCA but it has been working O.K. past 2.8 years.

funny stuff people recommending die hard over interstate or visa versa..... 3 battery makers people
1)east penn
2)johnson control who makes interstate, napa batteries as well
3)exide.
a battery is only as good as its warranty. east penn however is the best followed by johnson control then exide batteries....if u ever had problems with an optima then try putting it on a low amp charge(2 amp) for 3 days and watch it come back to life (in most cases).
a group 27 legend napa battery has 710 cca's,thats what we have in our cars (gen 1 anyways). if u have a group 35 take it out.

Battery is really important, stick with a battery that has 3 yr warr. Next Q? Will your alternator be sufficent to supply the vehicle's electrical and your system. Just something to think about.
