Default Dealer prices For 460 compared to kbb

I'm still looking....I'm supposed to have an offer from VW on my diesel in 10 days!

OK.., the dealer closest to me, Sewell, has a good number of 460's in stock. I test drove one, but it got sold before I could drag sweetie back to look at it. They have another, but their asking price is about 5,000 more than the kbb value. How much will dealers negotiate on CPO cars? It's a low mileage car, like 23,000 miles. I haven't seen it in person yet but just emailed the salesman I spoke with. I asked how flexible he is in pricing, and told him (in a very nice way) the price is more than KBB. I said if he would drop his price I'd buy the extended warranty. The car in question is a 2014 with 23,000 miles. They want $54,000.

I just emailed him him so I haven't heard back yet. I guess I'm just thinking out loud here.

What is is a good way to negotiate on used CPO cars? Honestly I haven't bought a used car in 20 years.

Thanks,

Go to cargurus.com and autotrader.com and see what similar cars are selling for. Truecar.com will tell you what people are actually paying in your area.

You can also try using the Costco car buying service, or any other car buying service you might have access to. My credit union (PenFed) has a car buying service, as does my employer. It's worth a look to see if they can get you a better deal.

Bliz I'm also in the Dallas area, Sewell has a few decent 460's but most are overpriced. That said, you get excellent service (from Sewell or Park Place for that matter). Sewell and Park Place ARE negotiable in terms of pricing, but usually by $1k-$2k maybe.

You can find a 2014 LS460 in the $40k range....I know because I've looked. I started another thread yesterday, Park Place Volvo in Dallas has a 13 LS600hl (which has tons more features) with 42k miles for $57k which is just a hair more than the one you looked at.

Anyway, I like the LS because a 80k mile unit drives very similar to a 20k mile unit, these LS460s age very gracefully.
CJITTY has a post of how he negotiated when he bought his CPO; CPO gives a false sense of security though this car only has 23k miles on it.

I found some decent 2013 models under $40k, you could buy a Lexus VSA (Vehicle Service Agreement) and be in the low $40s everything said and done. Any specific features you'd like in the LS (i.e. Mark Levinson, air suspension, blind spot, etc)?

I went to Sewell in Dallas several years ago hoping to purchase a 460 (mostly base models at the time)) but they were not interesting in lowering the price. I purchased one almost fully loaded at a Audi dealership a few blocks away and saved $3K. It pays to check around.

Thanks! I've been looking at the different car places online this morning. There are a bunch of 460's for sale around. And yes I saw the thread about the 600h. I'm not sure that car is for me. I don't want to have future issues with batteries in the future.

It's interesting in that Sewell seems to have cars with lower mileage than other car dealers around. In general, I'm sure there are exceptions. I guess I looked mostly at Sewell because of their reputation. I don't feel at ease buying a used car from "Joe's Used cars and Vacuum Sales." Perhaps this is the wrong idea, but Sewell didn't get this good reputation by cheating customers.

But it why do you say CPO gives a false sense of security?

There have been a handful of threads where CPO vehicles have had faults (things not repaired, overlooked faults, previous accidents etc.) to a point where a L certification means little more than a glorified warranty coverage. That is why I'm not too worried about getting this from a non-Lexus dealership (within reason, of course), some of the L460's I've found are at MB/Audi/Volvo lots which don't worry me. I found a nice 14 LS460F at a Ford lot that the used car manager said was traded for a Mustang which sort of makes sense.

My search pattern currently would be within a 300 mile radius (only because the LS460 are low volume vehicles, I'd rather find the right car than a convenient dealership), under 50k miles so you can always get the Lexus VSA if you want, and checking each "finalist" on the Lexus owners site to view the service records. I prefer the ML and pre-collision because my wife insists for a $50k purchase price, it should have those.

But I would definitely not restrict your search to Sewell or Park Place. As others have stated, I'd also invest $100 (or $110, I think that is what Park Place charges) for a Pre Purchase Inspection. The 13 and newer LS460's don't have too many issues so not a lot of problems to look for....

I believe that's correct. There was a recent thread where someone had the battery replaced under the original warranty (towards the end of the warranty coverage period), but when they asked about the new battery, I think it only came with a one-year warranty.

Thanks for all the input. I can see what y'all are saying and it makes sense.

Man, lots to think about and some time to read up on. I'm actually glad VW is giving advanced notice with the buyback deals. It gives me time to look for the right car, ya know? I don't "need" a car right now.

That's the Lexus value proposition right there...not only does a 80K mile car drive like a 20K mile car, for the most part, they're just as reliable.

Look around for a car you like and when you find one it will "jump out at you" and say: "buy me."
I looked around for a month or two and when I found mine (in a sea of crappy CPO's) I purchased it on the spot. Pricing is very competitive now a days and there is some wiggle room on the price ($1000-$1500) if you do the deal on the spot. I purchased a 2012 CPO with 18k. miles last year for my wife and I am glad I did because since I bought it home the front axles and bearings were replaced due to a vibration. I am happy with the CPO process but be warned that there is some crappy CPO's that have had body work done along with beat up interiors. The dealer I purchased the car from is very choosy on what they sell as a CPO.... The crap cars that were beat go to auction. I also suggest buying a paint meter to hang on the car to see if there was any paint work done.
TIP! Make sure the NAV is updated to the newest version before you take it home...... This is NOT part of the CPO process.

Don’t need a paint meter, just look at the over paint at the edge or the corner of the panel, you can always tell whether it is repaint or not. Manufacture paint by robot is much better than body shop, over paint left by the robot is very even and beautiful, human hands can’t achieve that.
