Default Buying LS out of state

Hello everyone, I have sort of a complicated situation. My family is very excited to join the LS family very soon(again!).

Seller is from Connecticut, car will be registered in ohio. Seller/buyer meeting in new jersey to inspect car, and all goes well, trade payment for title.

In regards to Plate for the car? How do we go about getting a temporary plate for the drive home? seller says he is going to keep his plate.

Brother cant go to Ohio DMV to get temp plate, as he's in philly this week. and he has no documentation of car purchase. He will have title and bill of sale notorized at time of purchase.

appreciate all feedback/input/advice. THANK YOU!

I live in GA and did my deal in CA. The seller provided me plates from Triple A. He is a Triple A member, it worked out great. Those plates were good for like 60 days or 90 days. Check into that. If it were me, I would consider riding it back with no plate and the bill of sale glued to my forehead.

Call insurance company an insure the car. Print out Id cards.

Take the plate of your old car and use that to drive back.
Don't speed. Have the title and Bill of sale with you.

Call your insurance agent, get the car listed. I live in TN and bought my car in MO. We just exchanged the plate from my LS430 trade to the LS460 and I drove it home.

I'd just contact my insurance guy, especiall before swapping plates from one car to drive another one. A cop stops you and runs your plate - gets different info than what he sees in front of him so he suspects a possible stolen car and takes you to the slammer until it's sorted out.

A legit bill of sale and proof of insurance and alot of praying that you don't get stopped along the way to have to explain it all. I say call your DMV to make sure you are in the clear.

Also call the state police (assuming in this case the New Jersey State Police) I know various states have various laws, but in WV the State Police is able to issue a 1-way tag for $1, assuming proof of sale is available, for purposes exactly such as this.

You definitely need to speak with your insurance company and/or your state motor vehicle department. Every state has their own laws. When I bought my 612 located in Ohio I had to pay for the car, get the seller's Ohio title, take it to my Registry of Motor Vehicles, get Mass. plates and apply for a title. Then I went out to Ohio with the Mass. plates to pick up the car. Of course you can get around that by having the car shipped.

Here's another example of state laws. Massachusetts doesn't issue temp plates, nor does the state recognize them. Occasionally I see cars with out of state temp plates. Little do they know that a cop could stop them and impound the car and not release it until they put permanent plates on the car (not to mention the ticket, towing and impound fees)..
