My service rep email me this morning, stating that Rusty will come look at it on Tuesday morning due to weather issue. As far as what should be replace, I'm not in the mechanic field but i believe the short block and pistons will be replaced. I will keep you updated. Just pm me your email address and i will forward you some important info.

I don't know how your car sound but my wife's has knocking sound when on idle at drive or reverse...if on neutral...sound isn't heard due to rpm is slight higher.

Still working tirelessly to find out why my 08 LWB is louder than my 07 SWB, I discovered yesterday leaking water pump that was confirmed by the dealer today. It is being replaced under extended warranty. Hopefully this will take care of the loudness at startup

ok thanks for the update-keep us posted. Just my opinion but I don't believe the leaking water pump is the source of the noise some of us are experiencing.

Yeah, I think the leaking WP would sound like loose bearings, slight rattle

when i googled water pump noise, there are tone of videos that showed that the pump can be the source of substantial noise from the bearing. Trying to be optimistic here :-)

Yes, when the WP is on its way out, there's a terrible grinding noise. This was my experience with my prior BMW E39 540... I had 2 fail on me within 65k mi. At least one was covered by the parts manuf warranty

Update: in addition to the bad water pump they found faulty belt tensioner, noise eliminated and much smoother idle. Seems that what I was hearing is combination of water pump grinding noise and wobbly tensioner/belt. When I searched the forum I found a tsb about the tensioner for 07/08. Now I wonder if my 07 idle will be improved if I change the tensioner...

hfahmy, sounds like you're getting to the root of your problem! Hope all will be fixed and noise is no longer an issue. My only update is I've asked my dealership to let me know the next scheduled visit of the regional service rep. so I can leave the car with them overnight so they can duplicate the cold engine diesel clatter (assuming it will be on a cold morning).

Lexus will have to do something soon. I've been in the new S550, and the interior on that car makes the interior on the 2014 LS460 look 15 years old. It looked like something worthy of being in a Maybach.
