Thanks. I'll ask the dealer to run a warm engine, piston slap check.

I have a 2012 Sport with the same problem. I was advised by the service tech that the problem was the high pressure fuel pump. He advised all was normal bu it is the most iritating sound. I notice you advised the problem was solved. What is the solution?

Soon after a knocking noise started coming from the rear of the engine right trough the fire wall and very noticeable inside the passenger compartment, even our Lexus independent specialist that services our Lexus cars for the last 14 years, says that from all the LS460 his company services, is the loudest of all. We have visited 2 times the original Lexus dealer we purchased from J. M. Lexus and Lexus of West Kendall for service in Florida; they all say all the LS460 have a noisy engine due to the 2 high pressure gas pumps and even the brand new 2012 would have the same noise. We took the time to test drive one with 500 miles in the odometer and of course did not have the knocking noise.
This is the most absurd answer response we ever heard. We have written 4 certified letters including the top Toyota representative Mr. Yoshimi Inaba Toyota Motor North America, Inc. Chairman and CEO, trying to get Toyota involved to do an inspection by one of their top engineers to trouble shoot this knocking noise that is causing it and they are ignoring our request since the beginning of the year. The original warranty is going to run out by the end of this year.
We welcome any similar comments from other LS460 or any other Lexus owners that are experiencing similar knocking engine noise.

I too have the diesel sound when cold-after a few minutes of driving, it goes away. I've been to 2 different dealers and they all say it's normal--same explanations that other viewers have heard--high pressure fuel pumps, timing chain, etc. This is my third LS-- my 1990 nor my 2000 had any engine noise like this cold engine diesel clatter that my 2012 has. I plan on switching to Mobil One 0w-20 on my next oil change-been using 5w-20 Mobil One up until now. Maybe, that will have a little difference. I have 13K miles on it and would like to to see some resolution to the noise before warranty expires-I keep my cars 10 years or 200k miles before selling them and want to make sure it can make it that far without engine problems. Otherwise I really enjoy the car-only other negative is that the stock stereo is no where near as good as the stock in my 2000 ls400-doesn't have the clarity and sound quality--maybe I should have opted for the ML.

I'm looking at purchasing a 2011 or so LS 460 but you guys are making me a little gun shy. I bought a 2001 Vette new and the piston slap was so bad at start up, I sold the car after just 3K miles. I don't want to go thru this again.

Was looking at a LS this am and stopped a tech for a couple of minutes re piston slap with the 460's. He said he that if there was a problem, he was unaware of it and that it involved the RX type engines. He said he had a LS 460 and loved it and noted no engine noise except the ticking from the direct fuel injection.

I believe that the cold start diesel knock is NOT in all the 460's. I drove a cold 2012 a few weeks back that the dealer had and it was nowhere near as bad sounding as mine. I've asked my friends who have a 460 and they look at me like I'm crazy when asking about loud cold start up noises--I'll keep asking different dealers until I have an answer.

I can assure you that the "cold start diesel knock" is not in all the LS460 engines. Piston slap noise is typically loudest when engines are cold. Here is a link to an article titled "GM Piston Slap": http://www.pistonslap.com/whatisit.htm

Although this article is titled about GM engines, it has some very interesting general explanations about piston slap. In the article there is an imbedded link that is also interesting in how it characterizes the piston slap noise. Here is that imbedded link: http://www.pistonslap.com/tsb/010601005.pdf

Although this issue has been discussed in several different threads, I have seen only one post reporting remediation by Lexus and that was accomplished by replacing pistons.

I think that "high pressure fuel pump" noise is a Lexus and dealership euphemism for piston slap.

I have the same concerns as others have expressed about buying a new car from someone who thinks this sort of noise is "acceptable." It may be "normal" but it would not be acceptable to me and I may not buy another Lexus because of the way that this is being handled.

One of the technician advised that in 2007 when they changed engines from the 430 to the 460 this issue arose and they have tried numerous ways to correct it even to the point of placing sound damping material in the engine. I was also told that it could be the timing chain since Lexus changed from a timing belt in 2007 , but I've never heard of timing chains making noise until they have lot's of miles on them. From what I've read and been told it is probably the injectors, but that dosen't make much sense. You would think that a vehicle that cost's close to $80,000 would not have this issue and if so a solution could and should be found at this point. Have a 2003 LS 430 and you can't hear the engine running. VERY DISPOINTING!!!
I have a 2009 LS-460 and heard the clicking noise. I took it to two different dealers just to see if i got the same answer. Both told me to "Get used to it and turn up the radio." Both said the high pressure fuel injection system is making the noise and cannot be fixed, yet at least. They have talked about putting more insulation in the firewall area to dampen the sounds some. Both "Diagnosticians" told me the same thing. Also, I have a friend who is a GM Manager and he says the Yukon's are making the same noise and he says it's the fuel injection system. So, do like my wife, just turn up the radio and it fixes the problem.

I had a high mileage LS-430 that I left parked for several days without starting it. When I did I thought the engine was coming apart. After a minute or so of running it quitened down. I was told by a Lexus mechanic to go to a GM Dealer Parts Department, buy a can of GM Upper Cylinder Cleaner. He then said to disconnect the vacuum hose from the master brake cylinder, put the hose into the can and start the car and rev it up and just before the can is empty, let the fluid bog the engine down until it dies. This is better done with two people. He suggested I let it sit overnight if I could and get ready to fog the neighborhood the next morning. I did what he said and it seemed to have worked. I never had that knocking again. He said oil had drained down from the upper engine through the valve stems and when oil got back to the top of the engine it quitened it down. It's worth a try I guess, but It SHOULD NOT be making that kind of noise to begin with, especially if it's low mileage.

I was told by a Lexus Diagnostician Premium fuel is not necessary but will give smoother acceleration and better shifting. If you are not using Premium fuel, go up a grade at a time and see if that helps.

After viewing your youtube video, you have more major problems that the type gasoline in your car. My LS-460 would have been to 60+ in a matter of seconds at that RPM. Take it to a dealership. Something bad is wrong.

Default Noisy 460 engine

I had a 2007 LS460L. The engine was so quiet the on several occasions, I left the car running when I walked away. Once I flew to New York and was having my Lexus dealer pick my car up for service while I was gone. They called me to tell me that I had left the car running in the parking lot.

I now have 2014 LS460L. The engine at low RPM is so noisy (click click click) that I am embarrassed for my friends to hear it. It sounds like a sewing machine. Oh if I had just bought the Audi A8 that I was going to buy.

The only reason I bought the LS 460L is because of the impeccable service I get. Lexus of Richmond is the greatest. Now I am trapped in a car that all in was about $100,000 and hate to get in it. Shame on Lexus. They sold the public on a car that was so quiet, you couldn't tell it was running. Now people two blocks away know my car is running.

I am pursuing a buy back with Lexus. I feel victimized. They have known about this for a long time.

Injector ticking with these engines is real and normal (listen to any IS250). Whether it is acceptable in an $80,000 LS460 is up to the buyer to decide. Go to the 2G IS forum and look up "carbon buildup". Lexus are rebuilding the engines on numerous IS250s (mine included) because of carbon buildup on the pistons, cylinder walls, heads and valves. Whether this is the same for the LS460, I don't know. This is a "silent recall" but is documented in the TISB lists for the IS250.

A friend of mine just got a new engine in his GS-300 due to the noise and the carbon buildup. My next door neighbor works for Lexus and says ALL IS Cars need tires and brakes about every year. My LS-460 has 10,000 miles on a brand new brake job on all 4 wheels. I had to take it back in and have the rotors cut again. I question whether they even turned them when I had all new brakes put on. I've tried to change my driving habits since the LS is a fairly heavy car.

As for the ticking at low speed or idling, yep, I have theat too. It seems worse at some times and not so bad at others. I walked off and left mine running one day also. When the transponder get very far from the car the vehicle alerts you but I guess I just didn't hear it.
